Politics: Is Rupert Murdoch’s “Sunday Times” experiment a total failure?

  • Why would I get any of my clients to talk to The Times or The Sunday Times if they are behind a paywall? Who can see it? I can’t even share a link and they aren’t on search. It’s as though their writers don’t exist anymore.
  • An A-list entertainment publicist, via an informant for Newser dude Michael Wolff • Discussing the fate of News Corp.’s paywall model for their London-owned newspapers, The Times and The Sunday Times. Apparently, according to Wolff, it’s so bad that people who subscribe to the physical paper no longer use the Web site. Unfortunately, there are no firm numbers here. But let’s just say that putting everything behind a paywall with no free content simply doesn’t work. source

Music: RIP Malcolm McLaren: The guy who sold us on punk

  • He managed the Sex Pistols, among others. One of the greatest music impresarios of the last 40 years, McLaren first ran an image-obsessed London boutique called “Sex,” and later parlayed it into pre-fabbing the Sex Pistols, an anarchic bunch about whom he says this: “I never thought the Sex Pistols would be any good. But it didn’t matter if they were bad.” The British rock stars were his greatest achievement, but he had many others, too: Adam & the Ants, Bow Wow Wow, and his own music. Dude died of mesothelioma, a form of cancer. He was 64. source

World: A couple drunk guys make a bomb threat on a Dubai-bound plane

  • Great job guys. You freaked out everyone at Heathrow. Robert Fowles of Dover, England, was charged yesterday with making a bomb threat and being drunk on a plane headed for Dubai. His buddy, Alexander McGinn, was also charged. Maybe the stewards misinterpreted what Fowles said – i.e. “I just got BOMBED at a T.G.I. Friday’s airport bar while waiting for this flight!” They have T.G.I. Friday’s in Britain, right? source

Music: Bob Dylan thankful that his weird Christmas album helps the homeless

  • They get food straight to the people. No military organization, no bureaucracy, no governments to deal with.
  • Bob Dylan • Regarding his choice to offer proceeds of his bizarre “Christmas in the Heart” to hungry and homeless charities. He mentioned this in an interview that ran in London’s “The Big Issue” and other similar sold-by-homeless newspapers in the U.S. That’s right, a guy who never does interviews with anyone gave one to a homeless newspaper. Random. But awesome. source

Offbeat: You’re hiring a prostitue for me? Thanks dad, you shouldn’t have.

  • No really, dad, I’m 14. You shouldn’t have. A creepbag of a dad in Britain, originally from Poland, attempted to show his son a good time (and get that pesky losing virginity out of the way) by bringing his kid to the red-light district of Nottingham. Unfortunately for him, his son chose the undercover officer. So now he looks like father of the year and is headed to jail for ten months. source
