Music: Rapper Drake: I’m not a legend yet, but it’d sure be nice

  • That’s the most flattering thing in the world but at the same time, real, legendary status can’t be dictated by the people who are still here witnessing it.
  • Rapper Drake • On being calling a legend, already, before his first full album has come out. Dude’s riding a pretty large wave of hype right now, one that promises to only get larger as “Thank Me Later” comes out next month. Why the hype? Part of it is his everyman approach to rap. In his rhymes, he comes across as an average guy who just happened to become famous, a dude who says he didn’t cry when Tupac died but will when Jay-Z does. He’s not ready yet but he’s looking forward to getting there: “I’m young. I’m 23. This is too soon. I really want to grow and be that guy.” Not bad for the guy in the wheelchair on “Degrassi: The Next Generation.” source

Music: “We Are the World 25”: The original was much, much better

  • This song is like seven minutes long. It’s like they couldn’t fit all the celebrities that wanted to help in a three-minute tune so they just made it longer and added lots of breakdowns. Including creepy appearances by a deceased Michael Jackson, who we’re sure would be helping if he were still alive (since he co-wrote the song). But that said, however misguided, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t help Haiti. So donate. Anyway, our recap of the video:
  • » Best moment: Lil’ Wayne busting out the autotune because he can’t sing at all. There was a rap breakdown, man. Why didn’t you bust out a couple of rhymes on that?
  • » Second best moment: Wyclef Jean throwing some vitality into that second chorus. He’s pretty much the most welcome voice on the whole production.
  • » Second worst moment: Teen super-heartthrob Justin Bieber singing the intro like a 12-year-old girl. Downright awful replacement for Lionel Richie.
  • » Worst moment: The rap breakdown, which we’re sure wasn’t in the original version. It wasn’t necessary for any other reason but to get more people on the record.
  • » Oddest celebrity cameo: Barbara Streisand, who barely – just barely – took this mantle from Tony Bennett. She was simply a downright strange choice.

Music: Real headline: “Lil Wayne Sentencing Delayed Due To Dental Surgery”

  • I don’t want this to get pushed back anymore. This is the last adjournment.
  • Judge Charles H. Solomon • Regarding the delay of Lil’ Wayne’s sentencing due to dental surgery this weekend. His tooth is cracked. So he remains out of jail until March 2. Most awesome excuse ever. source

Music: See ya in a year, Lil Wayne! He’s heading to prison on gun charges

  • We’ll try to keep the music scene warm for you, man. Wayne, who’s going to plea guilty to gun charges today, will have to start his prison sentence immediately, as per the plea bargain he has. Due to his growing up in a rough neighborhood, he might have a better handle on jail than other celebrities of his stature, but definitely don’t expect him to be treated like a normal prisoner. He’s just too famous. source

Music: T.I.’s out of prison, just in time for Lil’ Wayne to take his place

  • The Atlanta rapper was everywhere a year ago; will his star shine again? T.I., a.k.a. Clifford Harris Jr., was released from an Arkansas prison today and put in an Atlanta halfway house for three months. The “Whatever You Like” superstar was jailed on weapons charges – just like Lil’ Wayne is about to be. Won’t someone think of the larger-than life rappers? source

Culture: Pot found on Lil Wayne’s tour bus. No duh, Officer McObvious.

  • Do you guys even know who you’re dealing with? U.S. Border Patrol agents stopped Weezy’s tour buses in Texas today as he was headed for a tour stop in Mexico. Pot was found on two of the buses. In other news, if you freeze water inside a tray, it makes ice cubes! And if you pull that tray out of the freezer, the ice (eventually) melts! source
