Offbeat: Fat guy puts his middle finger into a huge free speech battle

  • Robert Ekas dared to flick off a cop with his middle finger and got ticketed by the cops despite the fact he did nothing wrong otherwise. How did he handle it? He filed a lawsuit, claiming they violated his right to dissent. When you’re driving, it’s the best dissent tool available, apparently. It’d be funny to see if this went anywhere.

Tech: HTC: Apple’s patent lawsuit couldn’t have happened to a nicer company

  • This is what happens in Silicon Valley. When you’re big enough to become a threat, I’ll slap a suit on you sometimes just to slow you down.
  • Yuanta Securities head of Greater China research Gary Chia • Regarding the lawsuit Apple brought against HTC. The Taiwanese company, best-known for making cell phones for Google’s Android software (including the Nexus One), is considered one of the island’s best-managed technology companies. The patent suit could really hurt their profile, which has been rising lately. It’s totally unfair, too, because it’s clearly a proxy war against Google, who is the REAL source of Apple’s patent grief. source

Tech: Apple sues Nexus One maker HTC: Get yo popcorn ready!

  • Oh boy, this could get ugly. HTC, which produces a number of Google Android phones (including the Nexus One) was sued by the iPhone maker for violating 20 Apple patents. “We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it. We’ve decided to do something about it,” noted Steve Jobs. “We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours.” Holy crap. Did you hear that SLAAAAAAAPPPPP? source

Tech: iPod headphone lawsuit jacked because defendants had no claim

  • WHAT?! No, really, we couldn’t hear you. Apple, which is in the midst of lawsuit hell with Nokia, can at least claim one big victory – a class-action lawsuit on iPods causing hearing loss. After winning the original suit, now they won the appeal? Why? Well, two reasons. First, the defendants didn’t actually have any hearing damage caused by the iPod, just fear it might happen. And two, even if they did, the court would pin the blame on them, not Apple. Way to lose embarrassingly, guys. source

Biz: Bad idea: Installing a security camera in Walmart bathroom

  • They say they were trying to monitor employee theft. Boom chicka wow. Seven Walmart employees (both current and former) are suing a Pennsylvania location that installed a security camera in the unisex washroom. Two employees in loss-prevention installed it, and it was found in March of last year. Three employees complained, and were fired for complaining. They’re part of the suit. Just think of how People of Walmart could use this technology, though! source
