Culture: Time’s Person of the Year not Julian Assange, but some Mark guy

  • OK, so many were gunning for Julian Assange to go into this spot, but at the same time, Mark Zuckerberg is the guy who would probably deserve the honor most if Assange wasn’t in the running. Why? This seems like a pretty good argument: “In less than seven years, Zuckerberg wired together a twelfth of humanity into a single network, thereby creating a social entity almost twice as large as the U.S.” Assange hasn’t done that yet. Plus, wasn’t Assange on the cover of Time like a week or two ago? Seems like he’s already got some high media saturation. source

World: Julian Assange makes first statement since being jailed last week

  • My convictions are unfaltering. I remain true to the ideals I have expressed. This circumstance shall not shake them. If anything, this process has increased my determination that they are true and correct.
  • Julian Assange • In a statement to his mother Christine while incarcerated in a British prison – his first since being jailed last week. There’s a lot of Assange news today: First, Assange is offering to wear a tracking device in hopes that will allow him to stay free and continue his work with Wikileaks. Second, he apparently has gotten none of his mail (including numerous fan letters) since being imprisoned – except a note telling him that his copy of “Time” was destroyed because his face was on the cover.  Finally, his mom, Christine, has some not-nice things to say about the Australian government. “There’s Julia Gillard opening for Oprah …  and my Julian is sitting here in prison,” she says. “Is it more important to suck up to the Yanks than to look after your own people?” Are you sure that wasn’t Tilda Swinton, Christine? source

World: “Openleaks”: Like Wikileaks, only transparent organizationally, too

  • Eventually it ended with me arguing with Julian about basically his dictatorial behavior, which ended with Julian saying to me that if I had problems with him I could just piss off, I quote.
  • Former Icelandic Wikileaks member Herbert Snorrason • Explaining why he chose to help start Openleaks, which sounds to us like the Gnutella to Wikileaks’ Napster. Openleaks, which will start up next week, looks to work less as a single Web site and more as a platform where people can upload anonymously and get their information directly to journalists. And no Julian Assange in sight, either. It’s good to point out that Gnutella is still operating all these years later, while the original Napster died almost immediately. Will this be a game of Julian Assange taking the first arrow but his idea ultimately taking hold? (On a side note, we hope that that thing on Openleaks.org isn’t the logo, because it looks a little … uh, phallic.) source

World: Russia thinks Julian Assange deserves a Nobel Peace Prize

  • Public and non-governmental organisations should think of how to help him … Maybe, nominate him as a Nobel Prize laureate.
  • A source inside Dmitry Medvedev’s office • Offering Wikileaks the kind of head-scratching support that instantly suggests “ulterior motive.” While Russia’s at it, perhaps Russia can go in support of Liu Xiaobo at his Nobel Peace Prize ceremony tomorrow, in defiance of China. In it, our boy explains in great detail what Julian Assange did to encourage his arrest on sex charges in Sweden. Beck’s main point in this clip? While he doesn’t like what Assange represents, something smells kinda funny to him. source

World: Anonymous takes out MasterCard to avenge Julian Assange
