Politics: Rep. Peter King’s radical Islam hearing not exactly winning him fans

  • First off, this is a spectacular photo of Rep. Peter King. He’s straight-up draped in America in this pic, and it’s something that we must admire. Anyway, King (the chair of the Homeland Security committee) is planning these Congressional hearings about radical Islam this week, and they have some people up in arms. For example, here’s Rep. Keith Ellison, a Muslim himself who showed up on CNN’s “State of the Union” with King: “It’s absolutely the right thing to do for the chairman of the Homeland Security Committee to investigate radicalization. But to say we’re going to investigate a — a religious minority, and a particular one, I think is the wrong course of action to take.” King claims that radical Islam poses a graver threat than other types of radicalism. source

Politics: Posted without comment: Texas Board of Ed’s stance on Islam

Politics: Obama to everybody: Uh, don’t screw with Muslims, guys

  • This country stands for the proposition that all men and women are created equal; that they have certain inalienable rights — one of those inalienable rights is to practice their religion freely.
  • President Barack Obama • Discussing the whole hubbub about religion in this country. Let’s just put it this way. Islam is getting a bad rap right now and Obama wants it to quit. “We are not at war against Islam,” Obama said. We are at war against terrorist organizations that have distorted Islam or falsely used the banner of Islam to engage in their destructive acts.” Which seems obvious but maybe not. source

U.S.: “Ground Zero Mosque”: Park51 developers could get public financing

  • If it turns out to be financially feasible and if they can demonstrate an ability to pay off the bonds and comply with the laws concerning tax-exempt financing, we’d certainly consider it.
  • Scott Sieber, a spokesperson for NYC city comptroller John Liu • On the possibility that the Park51 site will receive tax-free financing. Backing from Liu, a Democrat who supports the “Ground Zero Mosque” project, could be just what the project needs. The developers are trying to raise $70 million in tax-exempt debt for the project, which has mostly been troubled with overwraught drama thus far. source

Politics: Is the NY Post complicit in recent anti-Muslim incidents?

  • There’s some perspective. There’s been a bit of disagreement with some about whether the NYC cabbie slasher was part of a larger trend of anti-Muslim hatred (see, he worked for a leftist pro-Islam organization), to which this Colbert clip does a good job of putting it into perspective. The New York Post is willing to call the alleged attacker a “disgrace” on its front page, but it’s also worth noting that they had weeks of anti-Muslim headlines before that. And well, there was another incident which could clearly be connected to the recent anti-Muslim vibe going around NYC. Is it possible that weeks of angry New York Post covers had nothing to do with either of these incidents? Sure. But let’s just say that they didn’t really help, either. source

Politics: Pastor Terry Jones: Crazy Koran-burning dude gets death threats

  • I have no experience with it whatsoever. I only know what the Bible says.
  • Pastor Terry Jones • Regarding his experience with the Koran, which he plans to burn next month, on September 11th. As you might imagine, such an action is extremely controversial, and many people do not like Jones’ plan, which he’s talked about with 150 different media outlets. He’s gotten death threats. “We have to be careful,” he says. “The overall response has been much greater than we expected.” Jones is based out of Florida, which has been a hotbed of anti-Islamic activity of late, most notably a pipe bomb attack at a mosque back in May. source

Politics: Here comes the backtrack: Obama clarifies mosque comment

  • Again, it’s freaking Manhattan. Manhattan. Despite the fact that his comments about the Ground Zero mosque weren’t really all that controversial, the president put a qualifier on what he said last night. “I was not commenting and I will not comment on the wisdom of making the decision to put a mosque there,” he notes. Come on. Stand behind it or don’t stand behind it. Don’t waffle. source

U.S.: Obama totally in the camp of the “Ground Zero Mosque” builders

  • This is America, and our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakable. The principle that people of all faiths are welcome in this country, and will not be treated differently by their government, is essential to who we are.
  • Barack Obama • Making a spirited defense of the whole Ground Zero Mosque thing. Which we should note a couple of things about. One, it’s two blocks away. And two, it’s in FREAKING MANHATTAN, pretty much the busiest place in the world. Seriously, there’s so much crap there that there’s a strip club and a horse-betting kiosk within a block of the mosque’s planned site. We actually have an AOL News article coming out about this over the weekend. We’ll keep you posted. source
