Tech: To those still stuck with the iPhone 3G: iOS 4.1 helps (a little)

  • Oh, the lowly iPhone 3G users. Many didn’t upgrade their phones to iOS4, or immediately regretted it, because the new version of the OS was such a dog as to render the phones unusable. Fortunately for those users, the upcoming iOS 4.1 update will help fix that problem, making the phone at least somewhat usable. Don’t expect any miracles, though: The iPhone 3G only has a quarter of the RAM of the iPhone 4 and half the RAM of the iPhone 3GS. And it also has a dog-slow processor, to boot. (We’re still rockin’ iPhone 3.0 on the 3G, just an FYI.) source

Tech: Is Apple finally ready to come clean about their antenna problems?

  • They have a press conference scheduled for Friday. However, while it will be about the iPhone 4, there’s no word on whether or not it’s actually about the antenna issue, which Consumer Reports went out of their way to turn into a full-fledged PR crisis the other day. On the scale of smart public relations moves, it certainly beats Steve Jobs telling a customer, “You’re holding it the wrong way.” Unless they plan to stonewall some more. source

Tech: Thoughts on Flash: We’d like to jailbreak our iPads to use this

  • Need a reason to jailbreak your iPad? This seems like a pretty big one. That’s right, Comex, one of the main guys in the jailbreaking scene, has figured out how to make your iPad work with Flash, essentially taking the Android version of Flash and creating a compatibility layer for it. It doesn’t support video on that (that’s hard) or support keyboards (that’s easy), but we’re guessing that this could make Jobs’ whole “Thoughts on Flash” spiel sound a little stupid if it actually happens (and it works well). source

Tech: Apple should change its name to “Gaffle” after today

  • one During a demonstration of the new iPhone, the phone hangs on the loading of the New York Times.
  • two After telling everyone to get off the network (after getting ripped by a Verizon fan), FaceTime freezes up.
  • three Apple announces a new version of Safari before the browser itself is up. Then they retract. Oops. source
