U.S.: Health care’s death knell? Scott Brown is happy to see you, D.C.

  • cause Clearly in a favorable spot due to his status as the 60th-vote blocker in the Senate, Scott Brown took victory over Martha Cloakey in the Massachusetts Senat race tonight.
  • effect Know that supermajority vote the Democrats had for a number of months that ensured they could get some stuff done (and that they wasted)? It’s gone, boys. source

U.S.: Obama’s got the nuclear option for health care planned

  • If Scott Brown wins tomorrow, the Senate bill hits the House floor. Facing a possibly embarrassing loss for the Democratic party in Massachusetts tomorrow, President Obama has a pretty good solution in mind for the health care bill that he’s long fought for. The Senate bill – which has already passed – will get sent, with no changes, to the House. Then it gets voted on. And if it passes, this massive cluster#(&@ of a bill will finally get signed by Obama. A little sneaky, but it technically works – and fast! Well, as long as everybody goes along with the plan. source

Politics: Corny country comic Ray Stevens is still around, still sucks

  • 36 years ago, this guy was responsible for one of the cheesiest, corniest songs to ever become a No. 1 pop hit, “The Streak.” (In his defense, Owl City’s blatant Postal Service rip-off “Fireflies” might be cornier and cheesier.) Since then, he’s maintained a cult audience, but in recent years, he’s taken to releasing topical country “comedy” songs about current events, with a far rightward lean. This one, “We the People,” threatens congressmen who vote for health care. And it has a million views on YouTube. Who are these million viewers, and what are they doing searching for “Ray Stevens” on YouTube? It’s not even funny!

Politics: Rush Limbaugh says there’s “nothing wrong” with his heart

  • They found absolutely nothing wrong. It was a blessing. No arterial disease, no coronary disease whatsoever.
  • Rush Limbaugh • On his hospital stay for chest pains earlier this week. The health scare, which had some liberals on Twitter ripping on him hardcore, could not be narrowed down to heart problems. Limbaugh also got some rips in regarding the health system, which he says treated him no differently despite the fact that he’s a rich old guy. “Based on what happened to me here,” he said, “I don’t think there is one thing wrong with the American health care system. It is working just fine.” source

Politics: Harry Reid’s mistake “no” vote leads to this clever recovery

  • I spent a very restless night last night trying to figure out how I could show some bipartisanship. And I think I was able to accomplish that for a few minutes today.
  • Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid • On voting no for a bill that he spent weeks pushing the rest of his members to support. A funny little aside that in the end didn’t mean anything, as ultimately, he voted yes, and we all just laughed at the guy and said “aw, shucks, Harry.” source

U.S.: Campaign contributions didn’t affect the vote that much, it seems

  • $9.27 million the amount Republican John McCain has gotten from the health care industry; Orrin Hatch and Mitch McConnell were also well-compensated
  • $8.34 million the amount Democrat John Kerry got; Max Baucus (the bill’s biggest influencer) and Arlen Specter also got slightly bigger paydays than Hatch & McConnell source

Politics: Reaction from the Right – and Left – to Health Care vitriolic

  • This morning, as millions of Americans prepared to gather with their families in celebration of Christmas, President Obama and Harry Reid gathered with their liberal allies in celebration of government.
  • RNC Chairman Michael Steele • Regarding the health care plan’s passage. Man, Mikey, you’re a regular Mitch McConnell, aren’t you? On the other side of the spectrum, AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka said he preferred the House bill, mainly because, well, they didn’t need to gut everything to get it passed. He made this quip, though: “Not since the passage of Medicare 44 years ago have we seen Republican scare tactics so blatantly contrary to the interests of the American people.” source
