Tech: New bill would make it a felony to upload copyrighted content to YouTube

  • Wait, wait! Before you upload that episode of “Lil’ Bush” to YouTube, stop and ask yourself: Would I like to be a felon? Because if a new bill sponsored by Sens. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and John Cornyn (R-TX) passes, you could be. Under current law, streaming copyrighted content is considered an unauthorized public performance, which isn’t a felony. The new law would change this classification, meaning that the seemingly-benevolent act of sharing “Freddie Got Fingered” with the world could land you in prison for five years. The law wouldn’t apply to viewers of illegal streaming, only providers, but still. Five years? source

Politics: Alvin Greene: Nikki Haley no longer most scandalous S.C. politician

  • tuesday Some unemployed former army guy without a Web site, Alvin Greene, somehow wins the Democratic primary in the state’s Senate race. Probably because nobody knew who the other guy was, either.
  • wednesday Conveniently, it comes out that Greene allegedly showed a college student some dirty stuff on a computer, which is a felony. The Democratic party, freaked out by this, wants him to quit. He won’t. This’ll be fun, guys. source

Sports: Just when you thought ex-QB Ryan Leaf couldn’t fall any further …

  • Leaf was arrested on drug and burglary charges. You might remember Ryan Leaf as the guy who was drafted the same year as Peyton Manning and proceeded to tank in quick order. Or as the guy who worked at a small college as an assistant coach because his NFL career didn’t work out. Or even that guy who’s the trivia question. But now you can remember him as the guy arrested at the Canadian border on felony robbery and drug possession charges. If he keeps falling from grace, he might have whiplash. source

Tech, U.S.: Court: A dude uploaded naked pics of himself? Clearly it’s hacking.

  • Richard Wolf was looking at (and distributing) porn at work. An Ohio appellate court upheld a felony hacking conviction last week of Wolf that claimed he exceeded his authorized use of the computer. Part of the reason Wolf is facing this conviction is that the law has stretched – The Computer Fraud and Abuse Act has been allowed to be amended by the states who have put in restrictions against access to unauthorized information at work. Technically, porn is unauthorized, but most experts agree that was never the intent of the law. source
