Tech: Facebook will open up its platform to developers. Woo-hoo!

  • Right now, Facebook, everyone’s favorite pre-Twitter social networking site, is a walled garden. You can do some stuff in it, and it seems open, but you have to do everything within its interface. Twitter has gone out of its way to make the environment open for others, part of the reason it’s thriving. (That and Oprah.) source
  • Facebook’s opening of its garden to outside developers (which they’ll announce officially tomorrow) is mostly a good thing for users, but it’ll have to contend with people who have been burned by the service on issues ranging from privacy to design. Will users agree to yet another policy change? source

U.S.: “Craigslist killer” Phil Markoff’s friends give him the benefit of the doubt

  • By merely joining this group, you have all shown the restraint and intelligence necessary to not jump to conclusions and be able to read news stories with a fair eye.
  • A message from the Facebook group “Phil Markoff is Innocent Until Proven Guilty” • The group, currently 218 members strong, is getting outsized media coverage considering its size. Despite this, police note that the case is fairly open-and-shut, as the murder weapon was found in Markoff’s apartment. • source

Offbeat, Tech: Being on disability ≠ being on Facebook all day

  • A guy in British Columbia is getting his PC checked for FB usage. The guy, Brendon Bishop, is asking for permanent disability payments, claiming that a 2005 car crash made him too fatigued to work. But a ton of wall posts and pokes and Scrabulous games apparently claim otherwise, as the judge in his trial agreed to a defense motion asking for a scan of his social-networking usage. Someone’s totally getting defriended. source

Tech: Yo, back off bosses! Surfing Facebook is really productive!

  • In fact, it’s 9% moreso than not, says a new study. A new study that compares workers who use the Internet for personal reasons and those that don’t finds that those surfing MySpace, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and other sites unrelated to the job are actually more productive. We’re so gonna test this today. source

Tech: Mark Zuckerberg still thinks Facebook has a lot to grow

  • Two hundred million in a world of six billion is tiny. It’s a cool milestone. It’s great that we reached that, especially in such a short amount of time. But there is so much more to do.
  • Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg • In an article about the company’s super-sized growth. Despite the growth, the article focuses on whether it’s growing too fast for its own good. Considering how many people get ticked off by a redesign, we argue yes. • source

Tech: Classy: A Facebook group changes from pro-Jews to pro-Hitler

  • It baited and switched hundreds of people. Almost 2,000 people were shocked to find out that the group had changed its name from “I Heart Jews” to “Hitler: Great Modern Man of History.” (It appears to have been switched back now.) The video links to a local Fox news TV report that’s just a tad overwraught, even considering the sensitive nature of the material. source
