Biz: American Airlines could pay huge fine for sucking at fixing wires

  • $24.2 million the size of the fine American Airlines faces for safety violations that led to the grounding of planes in 2008
  • 14,278 flights the number of flights 286 Boeing MD-80s made in violation of a 2006 directive regarding faulty wiring source

U.S.: Feds: Leaving people stuck in grounded planes is not cool

  • Starting in April, the limit is three hours. Ever get that weird cabin fever feeling from being stuck in one place for too long? Well, after one too many incidents where people were stuck in planes on the tarmac for as many as 10 hours (holy crap!), the feds have stepped in. “Airline passengers have rights, and these new rules will require airlines to live up to their obligation,” said transportation secretary Ray LaHood. Good someone remembered that. Bad someone had to say it. source

U.S.: The FAA does the smart thing and shames The Laptop Jockeys

  • Guess who lost their licenses?! The Federal Aviation Administration gave the cynics of the world a reason to cheer today as they took away the licenses from the two losers who were too busy on their laptops to land the plane in Minneapolis like they were supposed to. The Northwest Airlines pilots, who were out of radio contact for 91 schedule-software-training minutes, have ten days to appeal the decision. But considering the hype the case has gotten, it might be tough to fight. source

U.S.: In case you’re curious, that Air Force One photo is coming soon

  • It only took scaring half of NYC to get it, BTW. The White House, which earlier this week made it sound like the photo of Air Force One flying next to the Statue of Liberty would never see the light of day, had a change of heart, according to press secretary Robert Gibbs, a.k.a. Mr. Awesome. By the way, the endeavor cost taxpayers $328,835 and angered thousands. Hoo-ray! source
