U.S., World: Laura Ling & Euna Lee: We were pulled back into North Korea

  • Feeling nervous about where we were, we quickly turned back toward China. Midway across the ice, we heard yelling. We looked back and saw two North Korean soldiers with rifles running toward us. Instinctively, we ran. We were firmly back inside China when the soldiers apprehended us.
  • A statement on Current TV’s Web site • In the statement, Ling and Lee describe the circumstances that led them into North Korea. Basically, a guide in China convinced them to keep walking until they found themselves in the country. They immediately went back into China, but were grabbed anyway by North Korean soldiers. Which, if anything, lends credence to the idea that they weren’t intentionally headed there. • source

U.S., World: Currently playing diplomat in North Korea: Bill Clinton

  • Dude’s trying to get Laura Ling and Euna Lee released. Ex-president Bill Clinton, who’s kept busy since he left office, touched down in North Korea today in hopes of easing a major diplomatic crisis and freeing his old understudy’s reporters. Ling and Lee both work for Current TV, which is run in part by Clinton’s former vice president, Al Gore. While one could reasonably assume a deal’s in place for the release of the journalists considering who’s stopping by, nothing has been announced yet. source

  • I said to my mom, ‘What are you talking about?’ Then I quickly did a Google search and the story came up. I was in shock. This was my good friend.

  • We hope that the North Koreans will grant clemency and deport them. There are other concerns that we and the international community have with North Korea, but those are separate and apart from what’s happening to the two women.
