World: The White House is cautiously optimistic on an Afghan runoff

  • There are any number of cliches you could choose from, but we’ll wait until the chickens are hatched.
  • A senior administration official • Discussing the White House’s happiness that there’s been a breakthrough in getting Afghan president Hamid Karzai to agree to a runoff, though there’s been no definitive agreement yet. Karzai had been fighting the idea of a runoff despite the fact that the UN found that many of the votes in his favor had been falsified. You still have a minor shot, Abdullah Abdullah! • source

World: Hamid Karzai has too much power over the Afghan election

  • He can somehow create an electoral deadlock. Despite the fact that the UN looked into the results of the election, and they’re designed to be an impartial third party, a UN-led probe into vote-rigging is on hold in Afghanistan because Karzai’s upset. Why? Because the UN’s throwing out questionable votes, which will cause a runoff election. And Karzai, for obvious reasons, doesn’t want a runoff. Karzai better deal with it, because he could be affecting whether the U.S. puts more troops in his country by fighting the electoral fraud charges. source

U.S.: George Bush the elder totally has Obama’s back

  • Politics is politics. But some things are bigger than that. He, like other Americans, would like to see the president be successful.
  • Former White House political director Ron Kaufman • Describing the warm relationship George H.W. Bush has with Barack Obama. Bush held an event honoring Obama’s public service last night, and despite the protests outside the Texas auditorium, it was a warm, festive affair inside. The elder Bush said that in challenging times, “the R or D next to your name is irrelevant.” Obama agreed. • source

World: Greece: Conservatives have a whole new country to hate now

  • Greece voted for a bunch of socialists. The center-right government of Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis flopped hard at Sunday’s election, finding themselves on the losing end of a snap election. George Papandreou, leader of the Socialist party, will become the new Prime Minister. The party, which looks like it’s filled with a bunch of geniuses because they pushed for the snap election, promises to bring the country back to economic strength. source

Politics: Daily Poll: Would Sarah Palin be bad news for the GOP in 2012?

  • Steve Schmidt, who worked with Palin in the 2008 campaign as John McCain’s chief campaign strategist, says she’d be a disaster. As these things usually are, it was a huge PR windfall for Palin, who stomped on it. The question is, is he right? Is he wrong? Vote.source

World: Germany’s Angela Merkel is having another go as chancellor

  • We can really celebrate tonight, but afterwards we have a hard job ahead of us.
  • German Chancellor Angela Merkel • Who was elected to a second term on Sunday. Despite the win, things are a bit different this time around. Merkel’s CDU/CSU voting bloc lost a partner in the Social Democrats (SPD), who bombed hard in the election (thanks to the recession) and had their worst result in decades. Merkel’s bloc will likely work closely with the liberal Free Democrats (FDP). All that wheeling and dealing and economic recovery takes work. So no partying after tonight. We know you like your beer, Germany, but now isn’t the time. • source

Politics: Jay-Z sez Obama wanted a “Jordan-style” election finish

  • Jigga says that Obama called him the closing days of the election and made a really funny joke: “He was calling me saying it was the fourth quarter and how we need to end this game Jordan-style. He was joking. He has a good sense of humor.” Now if only he can end the health-care debate Jordan-style. …source
