Music: It was drugs: Jay Reatard’s cause of death finally revealed

  • He died from “cocaine toxicity,” and alcohol was in his system. The plot to this film has been written way too many times. Live fast, die young, take in lots of sex, drugs and rock’n’roll in-between. And a medical examiner confirmed that this, too, was how Jay Reatard died last month. On the plus side, his legacy will be put on wax once again for more to hear: Albums by his bands The Reatards and The Lost Sounds will be re-released by two of his former labels. Sob. He was one of the greats. source

Culture: Sad: DJ AM’s plane crash suit turns into a wrongful death lawsuit

  • Before, it was just a sad story. Now, it’s much worse. The family of DJ AM amended the lawsuit against Clay Lacy Aviation, Goodyear Tire, Learjet and the estates of the two pilots killed in the crash. The suit states that although indirectly, the 2008 plane crash that Adam Goldstein miraculously survived (along with Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker) led him to the drug relapse, which eventually killed him. Who knows if the suit will be successful? Ultimately, he’s gone. source

U.S.: Daily Poll: Toking on Obama’s lax medical marijuana policy

  • The Obama administration does not plan to go after medical marijuana users not breaking state laws. This is a big deal for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is that Tommy Chong could probably restart his mail-order bong business. It’s a big reversal from the Bush administration. But is it what the country needed? Vote above. source

Culture: Trip report: Propofol (just like Michael Jackson!)

  • Propofol didn’t just make me sleepy; it made me feel as if my soul had been detached from my body and was resting just above it, on a cloud of marshmallow fluff, sweet and achingly tender.
  • “The Root” contributor Angie Chuang • Describing her usage of propofol during a colonoscopy, the way it’s supposed to be used. Michael Jackson, who overdosed on it, reportedly used it to sleep, which she says is “bull@(%^.” Chuang suggests, based on her usage, that Jackson may not have been taking it for the sedative elements but the “catharsis. … Not the sleep, but the escape.” He wasn’t loved enough late in life, so he probably wanted a temporary out, she suggests. • source
