U.S.: Have nothing better to do today? Read Phillip Garrido’s blog

  • The Creator has given me the ability to speak in the tongue of angels in order to provide a wake-up call that will in time include the salvation of the entire world.
  • Phillip Garrido • In a post on his bat#(&! isane blog, “Voices Revealed.” He’s been updating it in bits and pieces over the last couple of years, although things have picked up in the last couple of weeks. It must’ve been a sign he was about to be arrested. In other news, the authorities noted that the giveaway in the Jaycee Dugard case was the fact that his children seemed like robots. • source

U.S.: Virginia Tech, a school with a heavy heart, has another tragedy

  • Trauma like this is deeply painful to us all. Once again, this community is visited by senseless violence and tragedy upon aspiring young minds from our campus.
  • Virginia Tech President Charles Steger • In an e-mail regarding the deaths of David Lee Metzler and Heidi Lynn Childs, who were found slain outside a local campground popular with students. Virginia Tech has had lots of tragedy and bizarre death in its recent history. Beyond the 2007 school shooting which killed 32, a student was beheaded on campus by a classmate earlier this year. • source

Politics: Huckabee drags Ted Kennedy’s dead body into health care debate

  • It was just laying there in Boston! Huckabee, who is a smart, funny guy whether or not you like his politics, said on his radio show Thursday that Kennedy would have died sooner under Obamacare. “When Sen. Kennedy was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer at 77, did he give up on life and go home to take pain pills and die? Of course not.” We’re not gonna vouch for this, but we are gonna say that now may not be the best time to make this argument. source

Offbeat: Because Snuggies don’t appeal to white trash enough …

  • “Designer” Snuggies Whoever designed these Snuggies clearly wasn’t aiming for the runway, although the image of Snuggie monks walking around the catwalk is hilarious.

  • Snuggies for dogs If you want to make your dogs feel less ashamed of themselves, put them inside of an ugly sweater. Make sure it’s argyle. And tight, you evil pet owner.

Offbeat: The KFC Double Down: Did the cost of bread go up?

KFC Double Down
  • Chicken as buns. Why, KFC? Why? There’s nothing separating the KFC Double Down’s meat from your body. No extra layer of bread. No lettuce. No tomato. And the cheese and “Colonel’s Special Sauce” (the visual images that conjures up … shudder) only help you digest the chicken (the “buns”) and bacon faster. It’s an Atkins dieter’s dream food. To top it off, make sure you order it with a hearty glass of KFC Bacon Grease. source

Culture: The texting-while-driving video designed to scare you #(^@less

  • This video is very disturbing. But it’s arguably such a great example of a scared-straight commercial that it’s bound to stick in the popular consciousness for a while. Note: Please be careful while watching. It’s dark. It may give you nightmares.source

Politics, U.S.: Why you should care about the CIA interrogation reports

  • As stomach-turning as these individual acts of sadism are, it is far worse to consider that only low-level interrogators will suffer consequences while those who were truly responsible – the criminally depraved leaders and lawyers who ordered and authorized it – will be protected.
  • Salon’s Glenn Greenwald • Discussing the implications of the Inspector General’s report on torture. His analysis points out many scary things in the report – including phrases such as “threats of execution,” “threats to kill detainee and his children,” “pressure points on carotid artery,” “‘buttstroking’ with rifles and knee kicks” and “blowing smoke in detainee’s face for five minutes.” Despite the many black boxes, you can read between the lines. And between those lines is a lot of questionable government-sanctioned activity. Makes us sick thinking about it. • source

Culture: This Ryan Jenkins case is looking like a real mess for VH1

  • Previous charges Despite the fact that the network’s production company for reality shows supposedly performs background checks on its contestants, they didn’t pull up a conviction for assault which led to probation. He got arrested in April, too. And he went to counseling for sex addiction. Not the kinda guy you want on a VH1 show. source

  • Another show Even worse for the network, Jenkins had recently shot a second still-unaired show called “I Love Money 3,” which features reality contestants from other VH1 shows. It may never see the light of day. Now isn’t looking like a bad time for the network to return to 60-hour Behind the Music marathons. source

Culture: “Megan Wants a Millionaire.” VH1 wants “Megan” to go away.

  • This show completed production at the end of March. Given the unfortunate circumstances, VH1 has postponed any future airings. This is a tragic situation and our thoughts go out to the victim’s family.
  • A statement from VH1 • Regarding pulling “Megan Wants a Millionaire” from their schedule after the death of a model involved with contestant Ryan Jenkins. Jenkins is currently on the run from the law. The case is sick and disturbing (the model, Jasmine Fiore, was found dead in a suitcase – yuck!), and VH1 is doing everything it can to wash its hands of it, noting that the show was “an outside production, produced and owned by 51 Minds, that is licensed to VH1.” Guys, take credit for running the show. You didn’t have anything to do with the contestant going crazy. • source
