  • » The big shuffle continues: With Robert Gates’ retirement, and Leon Panetta imminently poised to become the new Secretary of Defense, the Senate has voted to confirm General David Petaeus to take Panetta’s old job. Petraeus had been serving as the Commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, but will be departing to become the number one man of the government agency we all think of when we think about high-level secrecy. Of note in this confirmation — ninety-four to nothing! Even in a thoroughly divided Washington, it’s clear Petraeus is still one of the most politically popular people to stand in support of, no matter the political party.

Culture: Ben Affleck as director: It’s catching on, according to the box office

  • $20 million the amount Affleck’s acclaimed directorial debut, “Gone Baby Gone,” made in its entire run
  • $23 million the amount Affleck’s acclaimed follow-up, “The Town,” made just this weekend alone source
  • » What’s the difference? A few things could’ve caused it. First, Affleck is the star of “The Town,” whereas he didn’t show up in front of the camera at all during “Gone Baby Gone.” Second, “Baby” could’ve been a strong calling card for Affleck the director. Third, there was a more obvious studio push of “The Town,” which meant that people knew about it. That said, our money was totally on “Easy A” to win this weekend. Emma Stone killed in that movie.

  • Director Kevin Smith • On day three of SouthwestGate, which is proving to be a bit of a boon for Smith, who has a new movie (starring Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan!) coming out next weekend.   • He’s waiting to bail himself out for now, based on appeals. Roman Polanski’s stay in jail may end once again, after a Swiss court said screw it and allowed him bail. Said bail won’t be cheap: It’s the equivalent of $4.5 million. But who knows? Maybe the infamous flight risk will consider that before he flies off again. source
