U.S., World: Currently playing diplomat in North Korea: Bill Clinton

Dude’s trying to get Laura Ling and Euna Lee released. Ex-president Bill Clinton, who’s kept busy since he left office, touched down in North Korea today in hopes of easing a major diplomatic crisis and freeing his old understudy’s reporters. Ling and Lee both work for Current TV, which is run in part by Clinton’s former vice president, Al Gore. While one could reasonably assume a deal’s in place for the release of the journalists considering who’s stopping by, nothing has been announced yet. source

U.S., World: Ready guys? Obama finally has something to say about Iran

I can’t state definitively what happened one way or another with respect to the election. But what I can say is there appears to be a sense on the part of people who were so hopeful and so engaged and so committed to democracy, who now feel betrayed.

U.S.: 100 days: Love him or hate him, Obama gets stuff done

1. He pushed through an epic, massive, $787 billion stimulus plan that was successful but managed to divide Democrats and Republicans in congress.

2. He signed 19 executive orders and 12 bills. (That’s a lot for 100 days.)

3. He moved diplomacy in a kinder, friendlier direction, particularly with Cuba, Venezuela and Iran.

4. He moved to stop controversial Bush administration policies, including putting in motion processes for ending the war in Iraq and shutting down Gitmo.

5. He finally got a freaking dog, an instant photo op if there ever was one. And it certainly beats the alternative.

Chavez, one of Bush’s harshest critics (and Bush, conversely, one of his), seems to actually like Obama and his approach to diplomacy.
