You know … basically the opposite of what Robert Gibbs said like a week ago. Also, is it just us, or does Biden strike a King Hippo pose here? source

U.S.: Have you guys seen how young West Virginia’s new senator is?

The just-appointed Carte Goodwin, 36, is by far the youngest senator. To put this in sharp relief: Robert Byrd was 92 when he died. That’s right, 56 years. source

  • 56 number of Democratic senators who will vote for the final financial reform bill for sure
  • three number of Republican senators who will probably vote for the bill (including Scott Brown)

Politics: Duh: The DNC takes on Joe Barton’s apology in new attack ad

  • You know, it’s a pretty petty ad. It’s a story big enough that most people know the ebb and flow of the situation. (And there’s no mention of the apology for the apology.) But in all honesty, if the Democratic National Committee hadn’t done something with this, it would’ve been disappointing. It’s almost like a “get out of crisis free” card. Except not really. source

Politics: Democrats wish they could clone Bill Clinton right about now

“Slick Willie,” as the kids call him, singlehandedly managed to help keep one House seat in Democratic power and save Blanche Lincoln’s hide. Not bad. source

U.S.: Alvin Greene case: Why is the filing fee so much, anyway?

  • 1% the percentage of your salary per year set aside for the filing fee in South Carolina
  • $10k the cost of filing for the Senate in South Carolina – the amount Alvin Greene paid
  • $3,480 the cost of filing for the House in South Carolina – less because it’s only two years source
  • » Is this the same everywhere? No. Most states charge a modest (less than $500) fee to get on the ballot. And three states (Arizona, New York and Michigan) don’t even have the fee at all. In fact, only one other state charges as much as South Carolina for their Senate filing fee – Florida, which charges 6 percent of the first year’s salary.
  • » A way out for Alvin: Pretty much because the Democrats think he’s in over his head, they’re willing to give him back his fee if he really wants to quit. And based on horribly uncomfortable interviews like this one, we can’t imagine why he wouldn’t want to quit.

A year ago, this dude yelled at Arlen Specter. Now he’s out of the Senate race, and Democrats aren’t holding town hall meetings anymore. Coincidence? We think not. source

Politics: The White House ready to accept Joe Sestak as one of their own

  • You have the whole world telling him he’s crazy to do this. It’s pretty remarkable when you can stand up against those odds and take on the longest-serving senator in Pennsylvania history.
  • Campaign Group founder Neil Oxman • Regarding Senate candidate Joe Sestak, who his media company made much-heralded commercials for. Sestak, two days after winning against Arlen Specter, is currently getting loved and appreciated by the Obama administration, which backed Specter’s campaign to the point where they reportedly offered Sestak a position in the cabinet if he was willing to quit the campaign. Now, they’re willing to give him a chance. He proved his worth. Sestak won against the odds. source
