She said she didn’t want to be the spokesperson for anything, but unfortunately that’s what she had become.
Los Angeles Times blogs editor Tony Pierce • Regarding the pain sportswriter Christine Daniels, a transsexual formerly known as Mike Penner, eventually felt towards her very public identity change. Initially, Daniels wanted to use her status as a L.A. Times reporter to make the change a megaphone, but later felt so pressured by the change that she changed back to Penner and eventually broke many of her ties to the transgender community. Penner killed himself last year. Many Times reporters still won’t talk about the incident, including the brother and ex-wife he worked with. source
We have shot an amazing number of people, but to my knowledge, none has ever proven to be a threat.
Top U.S. commander in Afghanistan Gen. Stanley McCrysthal • Regarding deaths of Afghan civilians at checkpoints. Despite stronger rules at checkpoints designed to limit civilian deaths at the hands of the U.S. or NATO, it hasn’t worked. While other changes (particularly the limiting of airstrikes) have led to a 28 percent decrease in civilian deaths, according to United Nations researchers, on-the-ground civilian attacks have turned the tide against the coalition in some cases. source
Seems like he’s considered a legend at Apple. Jerome York, a member of Apple’s Board of Directors, died today. It was important enough to knock the iPad off the company’s front page. The venture capitalist and former CFO of Chrysler got his start in the auto industry before moving to computers. At one point he was CEO of Micro Warehouse, a now-bankrupt computer company. We wish Apple the best in this tough time. source
“He was my inspiration, and will always remain so. His bravery these last six months cannot be measured. He is as much my hero now, as he was when I was five years old.” We have nothing to add to Keith Olbermann’s heartfelt obit for his own father. source
Corey Haim’s death is yet another tragedy linked to the growing problem of prescription-drug abuse. This problem is increasingly linked to criminal organizations, like the illegal and massive prescription-drug ring under investigation.
California Attorney General (and gubernatorial candidate) Jerry Brown • Regarding the cause of Haim’s death. Despite the autopsy having left evidence of this unconnected as of yet, an unauthorized prescription note in Haim’s name was found during an unrelated investigation on prescription drug fraud – meaning, even if it wasn’t the cause (still possible), he was illegally getting his vicodin and other drugs with forged doctor’s notes. Is it us, or is Jerry Brown trying to win political points with this quote? source
It is with great sadness that we share the news that our dear friend and family member, Mark Linkous, took his own life today. We are thankful for his time with us and will hold him forever in our hearts. May his journey be peaceful, happy and free. There’s a heaven and there’s a star for you.
A statement from Mark Linkous’ family • Regarding the death of the alt-rock icon, whose atmospheric folk floated around the more interesting edges of pop music for fifteen years. Sparklehorse wasn’t exactly happy music – Linkous actually had a near-death experience (overdose, coma, surgery, nearly-lost limbs, heart attack, the whole bit) at the beginning of his career that informed the rest of it. Among the many projects he was involved in (besides Sparklehorse): A collaboration with Danger Mouse just last year called “Dark Night of the Soul” and the production credit on a Daniel Johnston album. A terrible, sad loss for music. source
