Politics: Sarah Palin’s yammering on about some silly hat incident

  • I am so sorry if people took this silly incident the wrong way. I adore John McCain, support him 100 percent and will do everything I can to support his reelection. As everyone knows, I was honored and proud to run with him. And Todd and I were with him in D.C. just a week ago. So much for trying to be incognito.
  • Sarah Palin • Yammering about how her decision to wear a hat with a covered-up McCain ’08 logo wasn’t a slight on her former running mate. That’s the great thing about Sarah – her life turns into a vapid media slideshow when she isn’t even trying. source

Offbeat: The ongoing war against gingers continues in the U.K.

  • The more I thought about it, the more annoyed I got and I told the lady who worked in the store I was not happy.
  • Concerned British mother Davinia Phillips • On her anger at a Christmas card, sold at at least two Tesco stores, which featured the tagline, “Santa loves all kids. Even ginger ones.” Which is more than a little hairist. What you got against freckles? source

U.S.: Republicans ticked about Dems’ spending bill; Dems pass it anyway

  • It is business as usual, spending money like a drunken sailor, and the bar is still open.
  • Sen. John McCain • On the latest spending bill passed tonight. The Senate pushed it through with little Republican support and lots of Republican whining. The $447 billion omnibus spending bill, with lots of Democratic earmarks, hits Obama’s desk next, but not without lots of political ammo for the GOP to bring into the 2010 election season. source

Tech: Dear jerk from CNET: Way to be uninformed about Lala

  • Consider that Apple is now seeking help from a group that cast about the digital-music sector for years, swapped out business models multiple times (without ever finding a profitable one), and basically did little to distinguish themselves.
  • CNET scribe Greg Sandoval • Describing his skepticism on Lala, which Apple acquired last week. Sandoval’s take on the startup is beyond unfair – it’s straight-up uninformed. He wrote about the service as if the current version of the site – which sites such as Pitchfork and The Onion AV Club, and heck, we, regularly use – was nothing special. In our opinion, it reads as if he’s never actually used the service, which was struggling financially but had solid business deals in place. Why is Apple interested in Lala, like Google also was? Simple. Because it has a huge, passionate, cult audience – an audience bored by iTunes. (By the way, Sandoval totally missed Google’s Onebox setup, which TechCrunch was quite excited about.) Write about it when you know what you’re talking about, Greg. source

Politics: Amusing: The White House’s war of sevens with Politico

  • seven Politico writes a story called “7 Stories Barack Obama Doesn’t Want Told.” It’s about as dry and harsh as it sounds.
  • seven The White House sends around an internal e-mail with their own, more hilarious, list of seven, which rips on Politico big-time. source

U.S., World: Report: The Bush administration let Osama Bin Laden get away

  • He was within grasp in 2001, but reinforcements weren’t sent. First off, let’s state the obvious: We’d still have terrorism troubles if Bin Laden were captured – though they might be less focused. However, a Senate report says that the U.S. was close to catching him in Afghanistan, only to drop the ball by leaning on air strikes instead of putting people on the ground. Donald Rumsfeld is specifically blamed for his lack of action. source

Tech, U.S.: Free speech trumps hate speech for Google In Michelle Obama case

  • Although Google reserves the right to address such requests individually, Google views the integrity of our search results as an extremely important priority. Accordingly, we do not remove a page from our search results simply because its content is unpopular or because we receive complaints concerning it.
  • A message from Google • Describing their decision to keep a now-removed racist image of Michelle Obama on the site. It wasn’t for reasons of racism, but rather the integrity of the results. The image, which grotesquely portrayed Obama as a monkey, has since been removed by its Chinese owner, who apologized for putting it online, as well as the controversy it caused. source

Politics: The Daily Mail writes a column calling scientists arrogant jerks

  • Yes, scientists do much good. But a country run by these arrogant gods of certainty would truly be hell on earth.
  • The headline to a Daily Mail column by A.N. Wilson • Where he criticizes government-fired Professor David Nutt, and the scientific community at large, for making arguments that are technically accurate. Cannabis is safer than alcohol and tobacco, and using ecstasy is technically safer than riding a horse. OK, the horse argument’s a bit misguided. But the unnecessary and misguided dressing down of the scientific community Wilson makes is far more appalling. Plus, he compares them to Nazis at some point, which means we can totally discount his argument. Idiot. • source

Politics: The fine, very important, art of staying on point on your blog

  • The idea here is to give individuals a better way to monitor their electricity usage, with the eventual goal set at 40 million installed meters over the next few years. Great idea, guys – or you know, you could just advise people to turn stuff off when they aren’t using it, or not use energy they can’t afford. Just sayin’.
  • Engadget blogger Darren Murph • Describing the new “smart grid” technology that Obama’s pushing to implement over the next few years. We have a lot of problems with this statement – we understand the politics behind it, and while it’s a valid point (the program is quite expensive), it CAME OUT OF FREAKING NOWHERE on a technology blog which almost never talks politics. To us, it seemed completely out of place and off-message, to the point where it derailed any useful commentary about the post in the site’s comments section. It became less about the devices and more about what Murph said. This is a dangerous thing in blogging. While there needs to be a degree of feeding into people’s expectations, and a degree of breaking them, if you change the game in the middle like this, it can completely turn readers off. If you have commentary on your site, make it an integral part. Are we barking up the wrong tree here on this? • source

Politics: Obama: Republicans “do what they’re told.” Them’s fighting words!

  • We get the feeling that the summer of socialism allegations has permanently damaged the president’s ability to rise above political name-calling like this. Come on, Obama, don’t stoop to their level! Don’t trash on the GOP!source
