Politics: Dear Joe Barton: It’s not a shakedown if it’s BP’s fault

  • I’m ashamed of what happened in the White House yesterday. I think it is a tragedy of the first proportion that a private corporation can be subjected to what I would characterize as a shakedown in this case a $20 billion dollar shakedown.
  • Rep. Joe Barton • Saying the kind of thing that will not win him many fans amongst people offended by the oil spill. BP’s CEO, Tony Hayward, who went into the Congressional hearing today expecting a public flogging, instead got that starting out. Unbelievable. Save the apologies for a company that isn’t responsible for destroying the gulf, Joe. That money’s going to help people whose lives were destroyed, remember. source

Music: M.I.A.’s prison is YouTube, based on her new album cover

  • Youtube just got the avant-garde treatment. MIA has pretty much always been the most out-there pop star in the best way possible, and the cover for her new album “/\/\ /\ Y /\” (that’s “Maya,” for the non-hipsters) looks like it’s going to keep up that trend, putting her behind a wall of Youtube players. See the symbolism? source

World: Troubled Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama resigns

  • It was the shirt, wasn’t it? Yukio Hatoyama, Japan’s prime minister, hasn’t had an easy time of it since he became PM last year, and it’s only gotten worse for him after he ditched a campaign pledge to get the U.S. military to move off Okinawa. His party afraid of losing some serious momentum, Hatoyama resigned tonight. Sucks to be him. source

Politics: Rush Limbaugh asks exactly what everyone was thinking about oil

  • When do we ask the Sierra Club to pick up the tab for this leak?
  • Rush Limbaugh • Somehow pinning the blame for the oil spill on an organization that has little to do with the ocean. His logic? The organization pushed against onshore drilling, forcing it offshore into a more high-risk situation, which as a result created this oil spill. Uh, dude. No seriously. Dude. source

Offbeat: Great: The phrase “Buffalo Cougar” has entered the lexicon

  • When he got to us I asked if I could hug him. And when I did I just said, ‘he’s a hottie, with a smokin’ little body’.
  • Luann “Buffalo Cougar” Haley • Regarding her WTF encounter with president Obama yesterday. Haley tried to play it off as a joke that the president was in on, but we all know the truth. She’s the new Monica Lewinsky. Or the new Linda Tripp. We’re still trying to figure that one out. source

U.S.: National Day of Prayer: Franklin Graham’s sidewalk prayer

  • no Evangelist Franklin Graham (Billy Graham’s son) wasn’t in the Pentagon for the National Day of Prayer due to his controversial comments on Muslims.
  • but Graham was right outside the Pentagon praying just the same, huddled along the sidewalk with a half-dozen other people. Not the same, but kinda noble. source
