World: “Climategate” scientists not unethical, just not very open

  • We went through this very carefully and we concluded that these behaviors did not damage our judgment of the integrity, the honesty, the rigor with which they had operated as scientists.
  • “Climategate” investigator Muir Russell • Presenting his findings on scientists at the University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit. While the 160-page report largely vindicates their research, it does reveal that they didn’t use “the proper degree of openness” with public information requests. Which one might say led to the whole “see! we knew they were lying to us!” mess you see today. source

Politics: Mitch McConnell on Obama’s speech: Don’t bring up climate change

  • Every day seems to bring more bad news about the size and scope of this crisis, and reversing that trend should be the president’s priority. The White House may view this oil spill as an opportunity to push its agenda in Washington, but Americans are more concerned about what it plans to do to solve the crisis at hand.
  • Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell • Emphasizing that climate change that Obama anchored tonight’s address on didn’t actually do anything about the problem currently on the ground. Which, let’s admit it, is both true and what Mitch was going to say. We don’t disagree with him but think the issues aren’t so clear-cut. source

Politics: Two ways Virginia AG Ken Cuccinelli is kind of a douche to U.Va

  • first He revoked legal protections from
    gay workers at the university,
    causing a massive outrage
throughout the state that Gov. Bob
    McDonnell had to clean up.
  • second He’s now trying to subpoena the
university for the records of a
    former pro-climate-change
    professor, Michael Mann, causing
    more angry outrage. source

Politics: Is Harry Reid pondering what we’re pondering?

The Senate Majority Leader can’t seem to make up his mind – first climate change was coming first, then immigration, now it’s climate change again. source

Politics: Lindsey Graham angry over immigration bill push

  • Moving forward on immigration — in this hurried, panicked manner — is nothing more than a cynical political ploy. I know from my own personal experience the tremendous amounts of time, energy and effort that must be devoted to this issue to make even limited progress.
  • South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham • On why he’s pulling his support for the climate change bill. Simply put, with the new restrictive Arizona law fresh in people’s minds, Democrats seem to want to push immigration ahead of climate change, and it’s making Graham pretty angry. Just a note, though: Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has not made a decision one way or the other.  He just hasn’t firmly said that climate change will go first, and that’s what has Graham so angry (understandably). source

Politics: We imagine John Kerry feverishly working on a climate change bill

  • Senator Reid made it clear to me the other day that he wants a bill and he wants it soon.
  • Sen. John Kerry • Discussing the possibility of a climate change bill just in time for the sting of the the health care bill to wear off. He says he plans to have a bill within the next two weeks, which we imagine he’ll be writing at the very last second, asking Professor Reid if he can get an extension on because he tripped on a ketchup packet and sprained his ankle or something. source

World: Osama bin Laden believes in climate change more than the GOP

  • Talk about climate change is not an ideological luxury but a reality. All of the industrialized countries, especially the big ones, bear responsibility for the global warming crisis.
  • “Osama bin Laden” • As quoted in a new audiotape released by Al Jazeera. Now, before you conclude that Osama’s just offering up crazy talk, bin Laden also suggests that all global economies stop relying on the dollar as a benchmark. He also offered up this nugget of knowledge bound to get people talking: “Noam Chomsky was correct when he compared the U.S. policies to those of the Mafia.” See? Totally sane. source

World: Fighting words: Britain’s climate secretary blames China for failures

  • Ed Miliband sounds frustrated here. But in other comments he made about the giant ball of failure that was the Copenhagen summit, the British Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change sounded pissed off specifically at China, which he argued used its power to veto a stronger climate agreement despite the fact that the strongest restrictions would not have directly affected them (but would have affected the countries suggesting them). Miliband and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown are the leading voices in saying that the process of diplomacy on climate change is broken and needs to be fixed. source

Politics: Obama will take his victories, no matter how symbolic they are

  • Mr. Obama has put a high value on process and keeping things moving, recognizing that history generally does not remember the to and fro, only the big sweep of presidential accomplishments.
  • New York Times reporter Peter Baker • In an analysis piece on the recent pushes he’s made to get stuff done, even if it’s meant that the ends – particularly on climate change, although health care is the same way – don’t look anything like the means. The downside of this, of course, is that he’s had to compromise to achieve basic goals instead of more complex ones. Are these victories worth the paper they’re written on? We’ll find out. source

Politics: Copenhagen: Did Obama save the day or dilute the deal?

  • He came. He did a quick deal. He left. That was how US President Barack Obama intervened in the global warming conference in Copenhagen and whether he saved it from total deadlock or condemned it to issuing a powerless piece of paper depends on your point of view.
  • BBC Correspondent Paul Reynolds • Discussing the nature of Obama’s quick deal-making in Copenhagen. A few interesting things about the conference: Obama dealt with China and a few other large but unexpected countries – India, Brazil, South Africa – but left Russia and the EU out of it (shockingly). Also, the forum may have just been the wrong choice for something this monumental. Family reunions this big tend to fall apart due to lots of infighting. source
