Politics: Our latest AOL News article tackles the “Ground Zero Mosque”

  • Sure, you’ve heard of the mosque, but have you heard of the “Ground Zero Fountain Pen Repair Shop”? Because there’s one of those near Ground Zero, too. Along with a couple dueling falafel carts. And a horse-betting business. Whether or not you feel the mosque should go there, it’s worth noting that said mosque is in a very dense part of NYC. That’s what our article tackles. Now, excuse us while we go get some falafel. source

World: City of the future: San Juan, Puerto Rico plans a no-car reboot

  • It’s not often you see a city totally try to reboot itself. But in the case of San Juan, Puerto Rico (technically in the U.S.), they have an ambitious $1.5 billion plan in the works. Most interesting part? The city of 400,000 (with a 2.5-million strong metro area) won’t allow any cars within the city limits. They plan to make it walkable, with heavy mass transit. Intriguing. source

World: Thanks swine flu: In Mexico City, everything’s closed, even churches

  • We are all Catholic, so this is a big step. I guess I’ll have to come back later.
  • Johana Chavez • A 22-year-old who went to Mexico City’s Metropolitan Cathedral to get confirmed, only to get turned away by federal police in blue masks. The policemen were there to prevent further spread of the swine flu that’s killed dozens and sickened over a thousand. Most other public places were closed in response to the outbreak, by the way. So, point to take from this: If swine flu hits, not even religion is there for you. • source

Offbeat: NYC’s finest didn’t stop terrorism, but they did deliver a baby

  • 7:20 a.m. Seven pounds. In Penn Station. Marie Boothe, in the subway station during rush hour, couldn’t wait any longer. “Forget the ambulance, forget everything else – I’m going to have the baby right here,” she recalled saying. So she started having it right there. Police officers on counter-terrorism duty were called in to help deliver Caesar Penn Boothe, whose name reflects the unusual circumstances of his birth. Aww, that’s the cutest thing we’ve ever heard related to the word terrorism! source
