U.S.: Military treats Wikileaks problem with lame, TSA-style solution

  • problem Bradley Manning reportedly took thousands of classified documents off government networks by pretending the CD he was burning to was actually a Lady Gaga CD, then gave them to Wikileaks.
  • solution? Rather than focus on the fact that the system created a loose cannon, the military has banned soldiers from using thumb drives or other portable storage devices. Ahh … the TSA approach to security. source

World: Julian Assange: Wikileaks leader’s quirks add to his work’s appeal

  • They called me the James Bond of journalism. It got me a lot of fans, and some of them ended up causing me a bit of trouble.
  • Wikileaks founder Julian Assange • Making a pretty frank admission about his whole legal situation in Sweden, where he’s wanted on rape and molestation charges. Assange brought an even larger set of documents to the public eye Friday, revealing 391,832 secret documents yesterday, a leak more than five times as large as the recent Afghan War documents leak, which led to Bradley Manning’s detainment. Regarding Manning, who Assange has been matter-of-fact about in the past, he had something much weightier to say: “We have a duty to assist Mr. Manning and other people who are facing legal and other consequences.” Assange is a complex figure, perhaps one of the most interesting news figures around. And in his own weird way, he’s an essential part of the news right now. Even if some of his styles are questionable, some of the best journalism comes from these experimental methods. Ten years from now, Christian Bale should be all over this role. source

Tech: Hacker who NARCed out Wikileaks source getting death threats

  • I couldn’t just not do anything, knowing lives were in danger. It’s classified information, and when you play Russian roulette, how do you know there’s not a bullet in the next chamber?
  • Hacker Adrian Lamo • Discussing his decision to tell federal agents that he suspected Bradley Manning was leaking information to WikiLeaks. Since then, it’s been anything but fun and games for Lamo, nicknamed the “homeless hacker” for his fairly transient lifestyle. He’s gotten death threats. People have been ordering pizzas under his name. He’s reviled in the hacker community. And before this, he was simply famous for being the guy who hacked into the New York Times. source

U.S.: The military is freaking about the dude who leaked to Wikileaks

  • If he really had access to these cables, we’ve got a terrible situation on our hands. We’re still trying to figure out what he had access to. A lot of my colleagues overseas are sweating this out, given what those cables may contain.
  • An American diplomat • Discussing the potential awfulness of Wikileaks releasing  260,000 diplomatic cables that jailed Specialist Bradley Manning reportedly gave to the site. Manning had a fairly high level of access; there might be some fairly sensitive information in the wires. Manning, by the way, is the dude that leaked the 2007 clip that showed a bunch of Iraqi citizens getting killed, along with two Reuters employees. Why couldn’t Bradley have just gotten into quarterbacking football games like his old brothers Peyton and Eli? source

U.S.: The reported source of that crazy Wikileaks video is in custody

  • Hillary Clinton, and several thousand diplomats around the world are going to have a heart attack when they wake up one morning, and find an entire repository of classified foreign policy is available, in searchable format, to the public.
  • SPC Bradley Manning • Regarding some of the documents he sent to Wikileaks. Manning was arrested two weeks ago for reportedly leaking a number of documents to the site, most notably this video, in which a number of innocent civilians are killed in a helicopter attack. Manning was turned in by a hacker, and has not been charged yet. But holy crap. This guy gave Julian Assange and his boys a lot of classified info. source
