Biz, U.S.: Bankers falling off the wagon in high numbers, rehab clinics say

  • We absolutely do see more people coming in naming either a job loss or huge financial reversals or big investments with Bernie Madoff.
  • Sigurd Ackerman • The medical director at New Canaan, Connecticut’s Silver Hill Hospital rehabilitation facility, on the high number of former bankers coming in with alcoholism problems. Many (well, former) bankers live in New Canaan. • source

Biz, U.S.: This probably isn’t going to work, Bernie Madoff’s lawyer

  • Can we put Bernie back in his penthouse? Ira Sorkin, Bernard Madoff’s lawyer, is appealing the decision to put his client, who pled guilty yesterday to charges related to his ponzi scheme, back under house arrest. The Manhattan jail cell he was put in is a far cry from the penthouse he once lived, as you might guess. source

Biz, U.S.: Bernie Madoff: A man compelled to have killer returns. (Huh?)

  • While I never promised a specific rate of return to any client, I felt compelled to satisfy my clients’ expectations, at any cost.
  • Bernard Madoff • Explaining why he created his Ponzi scheme during a courtroom monologue while pleading guilty. According to him, he wanted to keep giving out continually good rates of return because he wanted his investors to love him. (No word on how he felt about his penthouse.) • source

Biz: What was Bernie Madoff trying to do when he stole all that money?

  • There’s a good question to ask. Dude stole $50 billion in a fraudulent ponzi scheme and apparently hired people to make fake accounting documents for some stupid reason. As Madoff faces up to 150 years in jail on 11 federal charges, which he’ll likely plead guilty to on Thursday, his investors hope that the guy finally explains what his motive was. source

Biz: Elie Wiesel: Not a big Bernard Madoff fan

  • ‘Sociopath,’ ‘psychopath,’ it means there is a sickness, a pathology. This man knew what he was doing. I would simply call him thief, scoundrel, criminal.
  • Elie Wiesel • Talking about Bernard Madoff, who made off with $15 million from Wiesel’s charity organization as part of the $50 billion he stole from investors. Wiesel, a Holocaust survivor and Nobel Prize-winning writer, says Madoff should be held in solitary confinement with pictures of his victims constantly showing on a screen. • source
