World: The View from Syria: Bashar al-Assad denies crackdown to Barbara Walters

  • This is a frustrating interview, friends. In it, Bashar al-Assad essentially denies the obvious — that there’s a bloody crackdown happening against anti-government protesters, led by the Syrian government. Example: Walters references a series of pictures showing pictures of violence — including against children. “People went from house to house,” she said. “Children were arrested. I saw those pictures.” Assad’s response: “To be frank with you, Barbara, I don’t believe you.” Like we said, supremely frustrating. Assad says that “terrorists” are behind the months-long violent crackdown, rather than Syrian troops. source

Biz, U.S.: Barbara Walters interviews Bernie Madoff from jail

  • For our interview, I was permitted only to bring in pen and pad. I was also allowed to bring in $20 in quarters since there were vending machines near our meeting room, which prisoners and guests are permitted to use during the visit. As it turns out, Madoff didn’t want anything, but I did mention it during the meeting in case we were hungry.
  • Barbara Walters • Delivering a first-hand account of her jailhouse interview with convicted Ponzi schemer Bernie Madoff. The interview, which airs on ABC during ‘World News’ and ‘Nightline,’ comes several days after a short segment was released from an upcoming episode of ’60 Minutes’ in which Madoff’s wife Ruth admitted the pair had attempted suicide. source

Culture: Oprah upset because people still think she’s a lesbian

  • I’m not a lesbian. I’m not even kind of a lesbian. And the reason why [the rumor] irritates me is because it means that somebody must think I’m lying. That’s number one. Number two … why would you want to hide it? That is not the way I run my life.
  • Oprah Winfery • Getting teary-eyed at the idea that someone would think she’s a lesbian. Oprah, who said this during a Barbara Walters interview which we’re now going to watch now that she’s said this, got very emotional about the accusations, which have revolved around her friend Gayle King. Here’s the thing, Oprah. Even if you were, it wouldn’t even be that big a deal. Ellen DeGeneres is basically your heir apparent, and she’s been an outed lesbian for like twelve years now. But we understand why the rumors suck. source

Culture: Obama on “The View”: Elizabeth Hasselbeck prepares her scowl

It’ll be the first time a sitting president has taken to a daytime talk show. Obama, by the way, also visited in his 2008 pre-presidential days. source

Culture: Rielle Hunter’s sexy GQ photos not what Rielle Hunter expected

  • You hear that? It’s the sound of immense regret crashing down on a woman who’s saying to herself, “I’ve made a huge mistake.” Rielle Hunter’s GQ interview and photo spread, which is nearly as skeezy as anything Eric Massa told Glenn Beck a week ago, was not supposed to be anything like that, she told Barbara Walters. Hunter also wasn’t wearing John Edwards’ shirt, but the photographer’s. She called the photographs “repulsive,” according to Walters, who regaled the tale on “The View.” She seemed comfortable during the shoot, though! source

Politics: Max Headroom: Paul Krugman has brass cajones, and then some

  • Owning the interview Scott Brown had a good chance to chill with Barbara Walters recently, and he does a really great job of coming off really smart in this interview – much smarter than Babs, in fact. The whole “big tent” thing should sit well with tea partiers, though. Heh heh.
  • A “deliberate” Rip New York Times columnist Paul Krugman, a pretty smart guy if you ask us, was also on ABC’s “This Week” and had a pretty amazing rip on Fox News, calling their handling of the health care debate “deliberate misinformation.” He says it right to Roger Ailes’ face.

  • Call it CandyLand John King of CNN’s Sunday show, “State of the Union,” is headed to the grind of weekday analysis. (And he’s taking his magic wall with him.) His replacement? Candy Crawley. She’s going to be the only female host of a Sunday talk show, which should be interesting.

Politics: Max Headroom: Not even Barbara Walters can soft-pedal Glenn Beck

  • The Odd Couple Here’s that Alan Greenspan video we mentioned earlier. Our boy Al says a lot of smart stuff here, but the part that weirds us out is the fact that his sparring partner is crazy financial guy Jim Cramer. Great match, guys.

  • The Moderate Couple
On “Face the Nation,” Joe Lieberman and Ben Nelson were standing their ground for a health care option which gets rid of all the stuff that makes the health care bill desirable. These two guys are holding the bill back, liberal types.

  • The Vapid Couple
Barbara Walters’ “10 Most Fascinating People” must’ve hit the bottom of the barrel this year, because Glenn Beck was on the list. Here’s the interview, and we must warn you: Glenn Beck still sounds like an idiot when he’s talking to Barbara Walters.

Culture: Patrick Swayze in January: I’m not gonna chase staying alive

  • One thing I’m not gonna do is chase staying alive. You spend so much time chasing staying alive, you won’t live.
  • Patrick Swayze • In an interview with Barbara Walters in January about his pancreatic cancer. At the time, Swayze said he expected to live two years. “I want to last until they find a cure,” he said in the interview, “which means I’d better get a fire under it.” He didn’t get a chance, sadly. • source
