Tech: Apple iPad: They stuck with AT&T? What crack were they smoking?

  • What is this fatal attraction between Apple and AT&T? Pretty much everybody I talked to really expected Verizon.
  • MKM Partners analyst Tero Kuittinen • Regarding the unexpected decision for Apple to stick with AT&T for data access on the iPad. Despite the controversy the phone company’s facing for its crappy service, Apple is sticking with them, at least for now. (On the plus side, it’s not mandatory.) It’s creating the kind of head-scratching which is causing some analysts to break skin. They bloody don’t know what’s going on. source

Biz, Culture: Why AT&T shouldn’t have dropped Tiger Woods

  • image Tiger Woods went from being seen as a golden boy to a &*^#-up in short order. Just like AT&T, thanks to the iPhone fiasco.
  • coverage Unlike AT&T, you can’t get away from Tiger Woods network coverage. Just sayin’. Also, AT&T shouldn’t be dropping things. source

Tech: Fake Steve Jobs’ “Operation Chokehold” worthy of a FCC response

  • Threats of this nature are serious and we caution the public to use common sense and good judgment when accessing the Internet from their commercial mobile devices. To purposely try to disrupt or negatively impact a network with ill-intent is irresponsible and presents a significant public safety concern.
  • FCC Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau chief Jamie Barnett • Giving Fake Steve Jobs’ super-amusing mass-iPhone-overuse threat some steam by actually commenting on it. Fake Steve (a.k.a. Daniel Lyons) is amused. So are we. Surprisingly, the whole debacle has generated massive amounts of press for the site and AT&T in general, because, well, it’s funny. source

Tech: Dear Fake Steve Jobs: You’re our favorite fake person. Ever.

  • The goal is to have every iPhone user (or as many as we can) turn on a data intensive app and run that app for one solid hour. Send the message to AT&T that we are sick of their substandard network and sick of their abusive comments. The idea is we’ll create a digital flash mob. We’re calling it in Operation Chokehold. Join us and speak truth to power!
  • Fake Steve Jobs” (a.k.a. Daniel Lyons) • On “Operation Chokehold,” his plan to stress test the AT&T network in protest of their awful coverage and attempts to punish iPhone users for their heavy amounts of data usage. You know, instead of improving their network and making their customers happy. The event takes place December 18 at noon Pacific time. We’ll keep you posted on the app they pick. Also, while you’re waiting, give this article a read. It may be the best Fake Steve article ever. source

Tech: AT&T’s CEO is a giant douchenozzle, based on this statement

  • The first thing we need to do is educate customers about what represents a megabyte of data. Longer term, there’s got to be some sort of pricing scheme that addresses the users.
  • AT&T CEO Ralph de la Vega • Describing his frustration with smartphone data users (iPhone users, mostly) who go whole-hog on data usage because, well, just look at their phones. The company’s service, which has gotten suckier as more people give into the iPhone’s charms (and because they agreed to the Apple deal without the infrastructure to handle it), could turn into a pay-toll-style service based on what this jerk just said. His claim: 3% of users are responsible for 40% of data use. Our claim: Those 3% are setting the template for your other 97%. Get ready. source
