World: As the ice caps get smaller, so do Earth’s plants and animals. Wait, what?

  • 45% of species are shrinking over time, a new study says source
  • » Blame climate change, the study says: It’s like scary, natural shrink ray. But, yep, animals such as fish, reptiles, birds and mammals are all smaller than generations previous — apparently a difference of one degree celsius is enough to make things smaller. The researchers, who published their study in the journal Nature Climate Change, warn to not jump to conclusions, though: “We do not yet know the exact mechanisms involved, or why some organisms are getting smaller while others are unaffected,” the authors of the study, based at the National University of Singapore, said in an interview. “Until we understand more, we could be risking negative consequences that we can’t yet quantify.”

Offbeat: Animals are pretty good at escaping from zoos in New York

Yesterday, a peacock escaped from Central Park Zoo. It flew away, perched on this Fifth Avenue apartment window, and took a nap. After it woke up, it flew back to the zoo. Not exactly the next summer blockbuster, huh? source

U.S.: San Francisco wants to ban pet sales. Good idea or terrible one?

  • A case of local government overreach? In San Francisco, officials are pushing a bill that bans the sale of pets. Say whaaaaaaaaaaa? See, The Humane Pet Acquisition Proposal merely started out as a bill banning the sale of dogs and cats produced in puppy mills or kitten factories — as part of a push to improve adoption numbers. (Which is actually a pretty good idea, if you think about it.) But suddenly, the bill’s scope broadened dramatically, and now includes pretty much any type of pet you can buy in a store — from goldfish to gerbils, bunnies to birds. However, the bill has a pretty big loophole: If you plan to buy a live animal for the purposes of eating, a law already on the books allows that. So, just claim that it’s rabbit season and that you plan to eat Bugs Bunny, and you should be fine. (photo via flickr user blmurch) source

World: Your life sucks less than this: Bear with its head stuck in a jar

  • Poor guy! For the last two weeks, this Canadian bear has been wandering around the forest with a jar stuck on its head. Jokes aside, this is really scary for the guy, because he can’t eat, drink or anything. Animal control has been trying (and failing) to help him out. Some argue that this is a perfect example of the humans having unintended consequences on the environment. Because, really, who wants to see a bear in such an awful situation? source

Offbeat, U.S.: Alaska and Florida consider a ban we don’t want to talk about

    • Uh, let’s just say they’re lookin’ out for Fido. It seems obvious it should have been on the books already, but the top-left-cornered state and the bottom-right-cornered state don’t have beastiality laws on the books. That could change soon, though – the main argument in favor of the ban is that those who molest animals are more likely to rape or molest people. So, there you have it. Beastiality bans. (*Whew* we actually got through that!) source
