Biz: Newspapers try to find the advertising balance on Twitter

  • Unfollowed @statesman. Best of luck w/ the Twitter ads, but if I can avoid them, I will.
  • Twitter user @LukeMorris • On his decision to stop following the Austin American-Statesman’s Twitter feed because the feed runs occasional ads. The Statesman is taking the lead with Tweet-based advertising, something which is a sore subject with users. Although, really, should it be? Twitter’s already the most useful marketing tool ever. You’re getting advertised to more than you think on the service. It might be a perception thing. • source

Tech, World: Good luck: France wants to mark images as Photoshopped

  • Every magazine cover and movie poster could carry a warning in France. The French are apparently concerned about body image in a big way. Because of that, they’re considering labeling ‘shopped images as such. 50 French politicians support the law, which carries huge fines for those who don’t follow it. So, photos of models are either going to carry disclaimers or are going to get a lot uglier. We wonder which. source

U.S.: Pretty much nobody likes this insensitive 9/11 WWF ad

Disturbing 9/11 WWF ad treatment
  • Um, holy crap. What can we say about this image besides the obvious fact that it’s completely uncalled for? Comparing a natural disaster to terrorism is probably not a good idea, no matter the context. (The World Wildlife Fund is not happy with the Brazillian ad company that came up with this, BTW.) source

Biz: Turning away money: Cablevision blocks Verizon ads in Newsday

  • Customers are still coming to us, and the net of this is Cablevision doesn’t get the benefit of our revenue.
  • Verizon Senior Vice President Eric Rabe • Discussing Cablevision’s policy of turning away Verizon’s FiOS ads in Newsday, despite the fact that they had been a high-paying advertiser in the paper for years. Cablevision bought Newsday last year and has made a lot of questionable decisions like this, according to Gawker. • source

Biz: These Bing ads for “The Philanthropist” drew a patent troll

  • Can you patent an advertising concept? That’s the question worth debating in this case, where small ad agency Denizen claims that the agency that made this “Bing” ad, JWT, stole its idea – a commercial for a product that advances the plot of the show on which it airs. Sounds patent trollish to us.source

U.S.: California and Nevada have a turf war over advertising slogans

  • What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, but what happens in California makes the world go ’round.
  • The slogan being used by a series of ads in California • In an attempt to retaliate against Nevada’s recent efforts to woo businesses away from the state. Nevada’s ads were a bit harsh, admittedly – they suggested that the state budget was a bunch of flying pigs, and legislators were monkeys – but Nevada also didn’t have an embarrassing budget crisis lately. In case Oregon’s interested, we totally have a great ad campaign for them: “Oregon: We didn’t give you an IOU.” • source
