  • Talk about vip. Obama announced the 16 recipients of the 2009 Presidential Medal of Freedom today. Among those to get America’s highest civilian honor: Stephen Hawking, Ted Kennedy, Harvey Milk and Sidney Poitier. I know, right? Pretty exclusive. We have to keep working on that cure for cancer, then maybe we’ll have a chance. source

U.S.: Eight-months-pregnant Darlene Haynes killed for her (living) fetus

  • She had her problems, you know, but nobody deserves to go (through) what she went through.
  • Roberto Rodriguez • The father of the baby found in a horrific murder/baby-kidnapping story in Worcester, Mass. Rodriguez’ girlfriend, Darlene Haynes, was found murdered on Monday and on Tuesday, it was discovered that the fetus of the eight-months-pregnant woman was missing. After a search, the baby was found – alive – with Julie Corey, a woman who had claimed to have recently given birth. Corey and another man were arrested today. One more sad angle of this story – Haynes and Rodriguez were on the outs, and Rodriguez had recently moved from their home. Sad times all around. • source

U.S.: Wheelin’ + Dealin’: Concessions made to push through health care

  • If your business makes less than $500,000, you don’t have to provide insurance for workers. Before, the barrier was $250,000. source
  • If you’re poor and paying premiums, you can now get subsidies after paying 12% of your income for premiums. Before, it was just 11%. source
  • Medical providers (like doctors) will work with the Secretary of Health and Human Services on rates, instead of rates being tied to Medicare. source
  • The public health plan won’t be the only option states can offer – a co-op medical plan is in the works. Details are currently being hashed out. source
  • Medicaid isn’t completely on the federal government’s back anymore – in the updated deal, states will help pay for it, too. source
