U.S.: Why did the U.S. change its airline security standards, anyway?

  • Simple: Some of the countries being targeted complained. After December’s near-miss terror incident involving the underwear bomber, the U.S. put people fourteen nations on a heightened security checklist. Some of the countries, including Nigeria (where Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab came from) complained about the treatment because they were allies of the U.S. So the U.S. decided to switch to more general terrorist profiling techniques. Good idea, or too soft on terror? We’ll find out. source

  • Convicted killer Scott Roeder • Regarding the murder of abortion doctor George Tiller, which he still feels is just after a lengthy court trial. He killed Tiller, who performed late-term abortions, after debating it immensely. “It was the most agonizing and stressful decision I have ever had to make,” he said, “and it took years to come to this conclusion, especially with the knowledge that I may never see my son, my daughter or my family again.” Roeder was sentenced to life in prison with possibility of parole after 50 years – the strongest possible sentence under Kansas law. source

U.S.: Army Secretary John McHugh flip-flops on “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”

  • If you’re gay and you speak out, you could still get discharged. A day after telling reporters that there it would be “counterproductive” to “take disciplinary action against someone who spoke with me openly and honestly” on the military’s controversial “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, Army Secretary John McHugh admitted that he misspoke about what he really meant. Which, of course, means that those who talked to McHugh could get in trouble, if he could remember who they were. Protip to gays who spoke to John McHugh: Grow mustaches. source

  • The president, just like any other citizen of the United States, is bound by the law. Obeying Congressional legislation shouldn’t be optional with the president of the U.S.
  • Defense lawyer Jon Eisenberg • Regarding the warrantless wiretapping case, which was decided yesterday. U.S.: Hutaree militia reportedly thinks the New World Order is coming

  • This is not about militias or a group of militias, but about a group conspiring against the U.S. who have shared beliefs that the New World Order elitists are in charge and seek to have one world government and is working with the U.S. government. The government claims suspected ringleader David Brian Stone Sr. had some grand plans, including carving their own country for crazy people out of four rural Michigan states, which of course is a great idea because Michigan sucks right now. source

  • In the age of e-mails, Barack Obama still digs the printed letter. He gets thousands a day, but sets aside room to read ten of them. Jennifer Cline, a 27-year-old from Monroe, Mich. wrote one of the lucky ones that had her letter read by the president. Her note, which showed optimism of turning a corner in a situation fraught with adversity, was super-compelling. It’s freaking massive, but this Washington Post article will be the best thing you read today. Trust us. source
