Tech: FCC could compromise on net neutrality policy this week

  • In case you’re concerned about this net neutrality mess, you might want to keep an eye out this week. See, the FCC is about to decide on a compromise proposal which would force network providers to accept all traffic, while conceding that it’s OK for them to manage network congestion and charge users more based on their usage. This policy would have the support of the three Democratic members on the FCC’s board, but the two Republican members would prefer that the Internet remain free of regulation. Which we, by the way, seriously don’t understand. This is one of those cases where, if the government doesn’t step in, consumers will seriously get trampled on. source

Tech: Do Facebook’s new wider ads invade your space too much?

  • Does Facebook disrespect our space by constantly changing its design? And should we complain about it? One thing you may not have noticed about Facebook’s latest design change is that the ads got a lot bigger and more horizontal, at the cost of social media real estate. While we’d argue that it’s not nearly as big a deal as it seems, digital media strategist David Dalka (writing for TechCrunch) would argue that it’s something you should be angry about. “An offline analogy,” Dalka suggests, “might be when a television channel turns down the volume of their shows, while keeping the volume of commercials higher.” We’re not sure if wider column width is the new Billy Mays, but it’s an interesting argument, to say the least.  source

  • 13 new patent claims made by Nokia against Apple source
  • » Whiny babies on both sides: Nokia, which hasn’t exactly been doing all that great in the market lately (but created a lot of fundamental technologies for mobile devices), sued Apple over a bunch of patents last year. Then Apple countersued. Nokia then went as far as asking the U.S. International Trade Commission to halt imports of Apple products. You know, how much does suing the hell out of one another solve? Nothing.

Tech: Random legal issue brought up by Wikileaks: Tweeting in court

  • The sky did not fall in as a result of yesterday’s tweeting, so why not allow it again? For the decision to gain wider acceptance we really need a crown court judge or high court judge to follow suit.
  • The Guardian columnist and media law expert David Banks • Discussing the legal implications of letting Twitter in the courtroom, as the district judge deciding Julian Assange’s case did. Banks’ argument? It’s very much a good thing, but journalists need to be given guidelines about what they can and can’t do to protect from libel and other issues, that citizen journalists might report things that they aren’t allowed to, and the constant danger that a journalist might want to use their camera phone since it’s right there. All of which are interesting angles. See? Julian Assange is a journalism trailblazer even when he’s not actively trying to be. source

Tech: Who had the year’s most powerful tweet? NBC’s Ann Curry.

  • According to Twitter, this was the year’s “most powerful tweet.” It’s notable that so much of the year’s news directly affected Twitter in every way, shape and form, and Ann Curry’s moment of advocacy in the wake of this year’s Haiti earthquake really stood out. Other highlights? The president of Ecuador calling a state of emergency via a tweet, Prince William announcing his marriage, our boys @BPGlobalPR making fun of BP, and Conan O’Brien announcing his second-act tour. All this stuff happened on Twitter. Who cares if only six percent of people in the U.S. are using Twitter, guys? The other 94 percent appear to be missing out. source
