Sports: Matt Holliday: Worthy of a big trade, not above riding Amtrak

  • Getting from New York to Philly on a Friday afternoon can be tough. I’m extremely excited to be back in the National League, to be back in a pennant race. This is a great team, a great organization.
  • St. Louis Cardinals slugger Matt Holliday • Who earlier in the day on Friday was a member of the Oakland Athletics. The Athletics were playing in NYC, while the Cards were playing in Philly, so he went the public transit route to scoot between cities. The star hitter was traded for a bunch of minor-league prospects and is seen as the final piece of a roster that will help the Cardinals make a pennant run. • source

Sports: LeBron comes clean about his high-school hijinks in a new book

  • Was the vehicle excessive, with its bank of three televisions? Maybe. Probably. Of course it was. So were the BMWs parked in the St. V lot, belonging to fellow students. But nobody ever questioned those.
  • LeBron James • Defending his mother’s purchase of (and acquiring of a $50,000 loan to help pay for) a Hummer. James was under heavy scrutiny at the time, as something of a “chosen one” at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron, Ohio who had already appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated. In his book, “Shooting Stars,” out this fall, James also admits to smoking pot with his teammates in a hotel room one night. “Stars” was co-written with Buzz Bissinger, who wrote a book you might know better for its TV show and movie adaptations – “Friday Night Lights.” • source

Sports: Guess who’s probably coming back to the NFL? Michael Vick

  • A conditional return is in the works, guys. Vick, suspended and sent to jail after the “Bad Newz Kennels” dog-fighting saga – a saga which managed to tick off PETA, anger animal-rights activists and somehow make Michael look worse than his troubled brother Marcus – reportedly talked to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell today. Early word is that he’ll be allowed to practice with a team this season and will be given a four-game suspension. But he’ll be let back into the league. We’re guessing one of the conditions is no more bad newz. source

Sports: Talking soon: Michael Vick, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell

  • Guess Vick may not be the guy speaking at high schools. Formerly-jailed NFL star Michael Vick and Roger Goodell are apparently going to chat soon, according to some of those anonymous sources we shouldn’t put all our faith into. Goodell could cut off Vick’s suspension, keep it going, or do something in-between. Either way, it’s entirely possible we might see Vick, who served hard time for his dog-fighting crimes, in a NFL uniform next season. source

Sports: David Beckham: Not feeling the love from L.A. Galaxy fans

  • Hey Becks, Here Before You, Here After You, Here Despite You.
  • A sign in the crowds trashing David Beckham • Beckham played his first game for the Galaxy at home this season – a friendly match against AC Milan, the elite club that Beckham chose to play for instead of the Galaxy for the first half of the year. And the fans, boy, they let Becks hear it, especially one fan who got arrested in a near-attack of the soccer superstar. So, in case you’re wondering: MLS fans aren’t storied soccer hooligans yet, but they’re getting there. • source
