Music: Well, duh: Anti-Weezer campaign creator getting death threats

  • I’ve actually received death threats over this, believe it or not. Some people have told me they wish I would get AIDS. This whole campaign, I fully admit that it’s silly.
  • Weezer hater James Burns • Regarding the unpopularity of his campaign to have Weezer break up. Beyond the fact that he’s only managed to raise a pretty impressive $1,200 of his $10 million goal. Which is kinda lame, right? As for the band itself, drummer Pat Wilson is taking it all in stride: “If they can make it 20, we’ll do the ‘deluxe breakup’!” Burns might even become a fan after a comment like that. OK, not really. source

Music: Whoops: Miami police use Jay-Z caricatures in anti-gang ad

  • Here’s an anti-gang ad the Miami Police Department recently put on their Web site. Hey, that guy in the center sure looks familiar. So does that guy on the left! Wait a second! source

Music: Guy offers Weezer $10 million he doesn’t have if they break up

  • Every year, Rivers Cuomo swears that he’s changed, and that their new album is the best thing that he’s done since “Pinkerton,” and what happens? Another pile of crap like ‘Beverly Hills’ or ‘I’m Your Daddy.’ This is an abusive relationship, and it needs to stop now.
  • Weezer hater James Burns • Explaining why he started a campaign to convince the band to break up, with the help of $10 million in forthcoming donations. Why would he do that, you ask? Because he hates Weezer, and did even when they were artistic titans. “But this isn’t about me,” he writes. “This is about the Weezer fans. They are our brothers and sisters, our friends, our lovers.” How much support does this guy have, anyway? $160. No zeroes after that. $160. From six people. That’s it. We don’t see this happening. source

Music: Unlikeliest Tea Party supporter? Velvet Underground’s Mo Tucker

  • Some are in disbelief that the former Velvet Underground drummer could support such views. We aren’t, really. Johnny Ramone was a conservative. Ted Nugent got his start playing guitar on a song about using psychedelic drugs. Why can’t Mo discount socialism? source

Music: Why not? Frank Zappa’s bust dedicated in Baltimore

Baltimore is the weirdest city on the planet. Between Edgar Allen Poe, Frank Zappa and Dan Deacon, it’s gonna be hard to take the weird outta that city. source

Music: Joaquin Phoenix movie turns Spacehog guitarist into exhibitionist

  • Remember Spacehog? Well, they kinda disappeared quick after “In the Meantime” made them famous for 15 minutes (too bad because we really dug it back in the day), but the guitarist of this band, Antony Langdon, just showed up in the most random place ever – Joaquin Phoenix’s bizarre new documentary, “I’m Still Here.” Langdon was one of Phoenix’s assistants, something of Phoenix’s “Johnny Drama.” Langdon he earned his keep with some very embarrassing, humiliating scenes (yes, there’s nudity – and more!). New York Magazine has more. source

Music: Willow Smith: Some quick math to explain why she’s awesome

  • (((Two solid genes + a brother who’s already cashed in) x (nine birthdays + inherent family-friendly appeal)) / (one half Rihanna + one half Lil’ Mama))^(The star power of her father, Will) = This song, which is gonna be a hit simply because of all of that. That said, it’s far better than any of that crap suggests. source

Music: Kanye West basically flooded Twitter with Taylor Swift apologies

She deserves the apology more than anyone. Thank you Biz Stone and Evan Williams for creating a platform where we can communicate directlySat Sep 04 13:29:37 via web

  • 356 days later, this. Holy CRAP. OK, the Kanye West/Taylor Swift thing needed closure, but Kanye offered up a bit more than that. Earlier today, he posted 70 tweets about the whole VMAs incident a year ago. We repeat. 70 tweets. We appreciate the fact that he can gather his thoughts finally and say some really sincere things, but Jesus Christ, dude. Get a Tumblr. (Footnote: Kanye only follows two people, one of them Taylor Swift, but Swift doesn’t follow Kanye.) source

Music: Deerhunter’s new video, “Helicopter,” totally effing brings it

  • In front of a backbeat that we can best describe as “underwater reggae,” Deerhunter’s new song, “Helicopter,” doesn’t blaze like the band’s most well-known hits (“Strange Lights,” “Never Stops,” “Nothing Ever Happened”), but if nothing else seems to suggest that the band might have yet another artistic breakthrough in them. It’s them and Animal Collective at the top of the indie game, and based on this, they deserve it.
