Culture, Music: Bad Seed Nick Cave once wrote a crazy “Gladiator” sequel

  • Storytelling, [it] works brilliantly. I think [Cave] enjoyed doing it, and I think it was one of those things that he thought, ‘Well, maybe there’s a sequel where we can adjust the fantasy and bring [Maximus] back from the dead.’
  • Director Ridley Scott • Discussing Nick Cave’s rejected “Gladiator 2” script, commissioned by “Gladiator” star Russell Crowe. Cave, better known for songs such as “The Mercy Seat” and “Where the Wild Roses Grow,” had a major challenge – create a sequel for a film whose main character died at the end of the movie. He solved it by going in crazy directions – making Maximus live forever through reincarnation, playing a part in World War II and showing up in the Pentagon. This sounds amazing. • source

Music: ShortFormBlog’s Saturday Mixtape digs into the ’90s buzz bin

  • 1. Mark Lanegan had a much more nuanced career after the heyday of Screaming Trees. Even so, it wasn’t because the band sucked – see “Nearly Lost You” for an example.

    2. Los Angeles is a popular topic in indie rock, but trailblazer Frank Black of the Pixies got there early. This scatterbrained tune also drew a line in the sand for Black’s solo output.

    3. Nobody broods like Greg Dulli. The former Afghan Whigs lead singer (currently of The Twilight Singers) came off as sophisticated on “Debonair,” off of Gentleman.

    4. Sunny Day Real Estate suffered from overhype at first. Their self-titled debut (which also has killer cover art) shows why – songs like “In Circles” grab right for your collar.

    5. Why does Shoegazer music begin and end with My Bloody Valentine? There’s other great bands from the era like Catherine Wheel, whose “Black Metallic” sparkles.source

Music: They’ve been silent, but: Lots of good news on the White Stripes front

  • Meg White, the half of the White Stripes that only has one main gig, is getting married to fellow Detroit rock royalty – Jackson Smith, son of Patti Smith and Fred “Sonic” Smith (the late MC5 guitarist). White has been married once before – to the guy mentioned in the box to the right.
  • Jack White, the half of the White Stripes that appears to always be working, recently noted in an interview that the band will be getting back together soon to record a new album, to come out next year. Good thing too – after their last tour went kaput, the band’s future seemed hazy.

Culture, Music: “Idol” champ David Cook wins the “bravest person” award

  • I actually lost my brother yesterday to a brain tumor, and I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else right now.
  • “Amercian Idol” winner David Cook • At D.C.’s Race for Hope 5K, which he was grand-marshaling the day after his brother Adam died. Adam, who was married with a family, had been fighting brain cancer for a decade. As you might expect, he fought back tears when saying this. This makes us really sad. :( • source

Music, Tech: Trent Reznor’s NIN app got rejected. The reason? His music.

  • “The Downward Spiral” was cited as the specific reason for rejection. The latest version of Trent Reznor’s iPhone app, “NIN Access,” was blocked from the App Store for its content. Which is strange because the content is largely the same as the original version of the app. When Reznor heard the reason, he responded (via Tweet), “Not even sure where to start with that one.” The iPhone App Store’s rejection process has long been criticized for this specific reason. source
