Music: Sadly, you missed your chance to go to an R.E.M. mecca.

  • A fire destroyed the Georgia Theatre. The theater, best-known for hosting the seeds of the Athens, Ga. music scene that birthed, among others, R.E.M. and the B-52s, was gutted this morning. R.E.M. still had a heavy interest in the 600-seat theater, hosting album release parties there. In a statement, they wished owner Wilmont Greene best of luck in rebuilding the landmark. source

Culture, Music: Must-see video of the day: Taylor Swift + T-Pain, “Thug Story”

  • Usually, we wait a little while before posting our first video of the day. But this Taylor Swift-goes-hardcore bit from last night’s CMT Music Awards is too good to wait for. BTW, Swift killed at last night’s awards.source

Music: As musical tastemakers, we highly recommend Rodriguez.

  • Rodriguez’ urban folk classic “Cold Fact” came out 40 years ago, was forgotten, became popular in South Africa, and was re-released last year. It’s still awesome, by the way. Gritty, subversive, critical and polished, it’s a real treat.source

Music: Dear Blur: Welcome back. We missed you. <3 Damon & Graham

  • The Britpop icons made their live re-debut over the weekend, and we couldn’t be happier clams. Sure, Gorillaz was good, but Blur is Blur. OK?source

Music: Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Cheap Trick Band hopes you will enjoy the show

  • Cheap Trick goes Beatles in Vegas this Fall. With the apparently diminishing returns of Tinted Windows not being nearly enough to keep drummer Bun E. Carlos busy, the meal ticket power-pop band he provides backing to will go to Vegas this September to play a series of “Sgt. Pepper”-themed shows, complete with orchestra. Don’t they have enough of their own hits to play that they don’t need to play another band’s? source

Music: Our Saturday mixtape: From Kraftwerk to projectors that are dirty

  • 1. It’s weird how much influence Kraftwerk wields, and how few people talk about it. They literally wrote the template for electronic music but don’t get constant adoration. “Pocket Calculator” is early synthpop perfected.

    2. Chiptune music is clearly influenced by Kraftwerk, and 8 Bit Weapon, led by Seth Sternberger and represented here by “Bit ‘n’ Run,” is a strong example of the form.

    3. Wow, “Bitte Orca” by the Dirty Projectors sure lived up to the hype, didn’t it? And they did it while making it look easy. “Useful Chamber” is – in our opinion – the album’s high point. It’s like Of Montreal’s “Skeletal Lamping” with asides that actually make sense.

    4. We’re convinced that whereever Gang Gang Dance’s “House Jam” is playing, there’s a massive party going on. And of course, someone forgot to invite us.

    5. There’s a lot of versions of Os Mutantes’ “Baby” floating around, but this one, with its garagey edges, is our favorite. Rita Lee’s 1971 acoustic version is also worth your time.source

Biz, Music: A high school radio station fought the music industry head on

  • WMPH set the example for protesting performance royalties for artists. The station, based in Delaware, is the subject of an FCC complaint filed by the musicFIRST Coalition after they chose not to play any of the artists on this list for a month back in 2007 as an educational protest against the idea of paying performance royalties to artists. In a statement posted on the WMPH site, the station says that, by asking stations to pay for a promotional tool, “the musicFIRST coalition of artists is attempting to hurt the radio stations, disc jockeys, and fans that have always been their greatest ally.” source

Music: The kings of mopey strummer music create their own supergroup

  • The quartet, which calls itself Monsters of Folk, will release its self-titled debut September 22. Usually we’re against supergroups, but these guys have way more pedigree than Tinted Windows. (But fewer hit singles.) source
  • Because, seriously, who can dispute the awesomeness of an indie rock supergroup that actually calls itself Monsters of Folk? It’s like the Justice League, except it’s gonna put you to sleep and make you a little sad. source
