Music: Perez Hilton starts record label, still aiming for global domination

  • He says he really wants to be a gay, white Oprah. Well, he’s not starting a production company or opening schools in Africa – yet – but the guy does seem pretty intent on world domination. His gossip blog got a whopping 268.9 million hits in June and he can take credit for “discovering” the likes of Mika and Lady Gaga…that’s good, right? source

Music: We don’t know what to make of this Discovery album. Do you?

  • The pedigree on this side project is pretty solid for indie circles – a guy from Vampire Weekend and a guy from Ra Ra Riot. But the beats on this bizarre attempt at R&B are so cheesy and over-the-top that we’re not sure whether to dance or laugh. What do you think of “LP”? Check it out above.source

Music: Attack Attack!’s “Stick Stickly” video so bad, the Guardian dissected it

  • We were totally ahead of the game here. Back in mid-June, we saw the worst music video ever, an unspeakably bad concoction of gyration, cliché, screaming and in-unison headbanging called “Stick Stickly” by screamo band Attack Attack! It was so bad we posted about it twice. Well, we caught the trend just before that bastion of high culture, The Guardian, got a hold of it. And they dissected it in profound detail. Our favorite description of the band: “Like a set of dancers representing Undead versions of Jonas brothers on a Halloween-Pride parade.” source

Music: Amazing! Japanese band Sour perfects the YouTube viral video

  • This is our Babe Ruth pointing at the the outfield moment: In one week, Sour’s music video will be everywhere. In one year, this video will be seen as a defining moment for YouTube. In fifty years, sociologists will point to this video as a leading example of viral video. It’s just that amazing.source

Music: ShortFormBand: Paper Plane Pilot soothes us with his synth-pop

Paper Plane Pilot, a.k.a. Dustin Frelich
  • Whoa, what is this?

In our continuing effort to try new things, here’s our latest: Band coverage! This time, Paper Plane Pilot (Dustin Frelich) cheerily gets out his synth and makes us smile with breakbeats and sine waves. Want to see your band here? E-mail us or bug us on Twitter!

    Listen to them

Q1: In 15 words or less, describe your sound: Electronic indie pop. Happy melancholy laced with introspective songwriting and catchy melodies.

Q2: Name three influences that inspire you, with three words each on why they’re awesome:
    80s Music: Rad! Awesome! Cool!
    The Internet: Wisdom on demand
    Simplicity: Overcomplexity is tiring

Q3: What’s a recent song you’ve been digging? Write ten words explaining why:
Plastic Operator – Home 0207: Pulsing. Driving. Soothing. A muted answer to epic electronic hits.

Q4: In 140 characters or less, how do you use social networking to get the word out: Social networks allow me to participate in conversations with other music lovers. The “rock star” paradigm is dying. We’re all just people.

Q5: In 15 words or less, what’s next for you? I’m working on songs for a new album. Keep an ear out!source

Music: U2 translates “Sunday Bloody Sunday” to Iran’s problems

  • How long, how long must they sing this song? Good question. Unfortunately, they keep getting reasons to sing it – the latest from Iran, for example. Even though this song is a genuine classic, it’s too bad they suck now.source

Music: Saturday Mixtape: R.E.M. clear, Spoon noisy, Moby actually good

  • 1. Wow. Michael Stipe sounds so – clear. The remastered version of R.E.M.’s second album, “Reckoning,” needed it, and “So. Central Rain,” a song so muffled we could only make out the “I’m sorrrrrrry …” chorus before, now is as clean as a hybrid car.
    2. Hot Lava named a song after an imaginary Mac command, which sounds silly, but the song is so cheery that you won’t care. Best part? The intro. It shouldn’t work but does.
    3. Phil Ochs was a protest folkie who never gave up on his mission but never measured up to more famous peers like Joan Baez or Bob Dylan. Ochs committed suicide in 1976 – a real shame, as songs like “Links on the Chain” show he had a gift for insight.
    4. Where does a band like Spoon go after finally breaking big? By releasing an odd little EP. “Tweakers,” a noisy instrumental, is the strangest, but it’s great mood music.
    5. Behold, the resurrection of Moby. After years of being seen as a sellout (in a bad way) after “Play” sold out (in a good way), his latest, “Wait For Me,” is getting good reviews. Awesome video aside, “Shot in the Back of the Head” is our favorite.source

Music: Travis Morrison never got over that 0.0 review on Pitchfork

  • RETIRED! No shows, no records, no band. Just relaxing in Brooklyn. Befriend me on facebook. I’m so nice!
  • Travis Morrison • In a post on his Web site, which gave into the former Dismemberment Plan lead singer’s fate the second that this review ran: His career in music is over. Pitchfork reported on it, but it’s kind of like kicking the corpse after they killed it. Fortunately, Morrison has a nice backup career in the form of a job working for the Huffington Post. • source

Music: This Death Cab for Cutie fan video was so good, it became official

  • Heartwarming music story of the day: Director guy rolls his own Death Cab for Cutie video. It’s clever and fun to watch. Band sees it. Band likes it. It becomes the official video for the song. Now, watch how “Little Bribes” was made awesome by Ross Ching.source
