Politics: Party leadership supports Thune candidacy

  • I think he’s the complete package and is the kind of person who could conceivably go the distance in a race for the presidency…I hope that he will run and win.
  • Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell • Discussing the national ambitions of Sen. John Thune of South Dakota. source

Politics: Darkhorse candidate Thune will run in 2012

  • This could be the next President of the United States. You may not have heard of him, but Sen. John Thune of South Dakota has been floated for some time as a possible GOP candidate in 2012. Although he hasn’t been on people’s radar as much as, say, Romney or Palin, The Weekly Standard reported today that he’s decided to run. Thune is young, fresh, and pretty, and gets bonus GOP points for having unseated Tom Daschle in 2004. What he doesn’t have (yet) is name recognition. Nevertheless, 2012 just got a bit more interesting. source

Biz: Wall Street Journal as “WSJ”: You can see it from miles away

  • We blame Rupert Murdoch. One of the great icons of traditional American journalism has decided to take a design cue straight out of a 5,000-circulation weekly, taking a once-simple nameplate and making it REALLY REALLY BIG for their new weekend editions. Our buddy Charles Apple had the right thought on this whole thing, referring to the change with the headline “‘WSJ’? WTF”. It’s probably one of the worst design decisions by a major newspaper in a long, long time. It’s harsh, but honest. source

Politics: WorldNetDaily could use your graphic design skills, guys

  • You will enjoy this work a lot more if you are on the same page as us. You will be bombarded daily with stories about Obama’s birth certificate, the Tea Party, Sarah Palin, guns, abortions, religion, etc. If these things make you cringe, this isn’t the right job for you. We’re depending on your honesty when applying.
  • A job posting by far-right-leaning Web dinosaur WorldNetDaily • Regarding their online-only magazine, WorldNetWeekly. This does not sound like a fun job to start out: You start out as a part-time intern for three months, then become a paid contractor, and then work your way up to a full-time staffer with benefits. It’s telecommuting and you have to be available mornings. We don’t care. We want this job. Have you seen their Web site? It’s a beacon of bad design. You know where our e-mail is, WorldNetDaily staff. Come on. source

Tech: More magazine-like Web design: Is this a good thing?

  • Is this what people want their web to be? It strikes me as an anti-Craigslist, an anti-Google. It’s a magazining of web content beyond anything we might have expected. It’s attractive! But it’s also a whole lot less.
  • The Awl writer Choire Sicha • Writing some pretty harsh words on both the recent New York Times opinion page redesign and the beta version of Gawker currently floating around. Maybe we’re more designerly than writerly, but an evolution away from Craigslist and Google is probably a good thing for the Web. That said, we’re bigger fans of the NYT opinion page than Gawker, which comes off a little too busy with that standing ad/menu design. The way that stories were listed before made us feel like we weren’t missing anything. (Disclosure: For what it’s worth, after months of iPad use, we find the format of Pulse to be immensely more useful than that of Flipboard, mainly for the reason Sicha suggests.) source

Politics: Obama on GOP Pledge: Whatever, stupid jerks

  • That’s not a prescription for a better future. It’s an echo of a disastrous decade we can’t afford to relive.
  • President Barack Obama • Discussing the GOP’s new “Pledge to America,” which promises to repeal many of the things Obama has done. He’s ticked that the GOP, for example, wants to roll back health care. In regards to the recession in general, Obama had this to say: “We have to keep pushing to promote growth that will generate the jobs we need, and repair the terrible damage the recession has done.” source
