One of the guys who made Tumblr also made Instapaper, which we use to pre-curate our articles. Once a side project, now it’s a full-time gig that’s already profitable. source

U.S.: Why Facebook broke: A configuration error, a feedback loop

  • Early today Facebook was down or unreachable for many of you for approximately 2.5 hours. This is the worst outage we’ve had in over four years, and we wanted to first of all apologize for it.
  • Facebook employee Robert Johnson • Explaining why Facebook was so broken today. Simply put, there was a configuration error so huge that it caused the entire site to fall over itself. It created a feedback loop in a cluster of databases and couldn’t handle the number of requests. All engineers could do to stop it was turn off the site for two and a half hours. That’s right. The entire site. It’s not often that Facebook crashes at all, let alone in the middle of the day on a weekday. That was epic, eh? source

World: Three crazy things Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said at the UN today

  • one9/11 took place in part “to reverse the declining American economy and its grips on the Middle East in order to save the Zionist regime.”
  • twoAhmadinejad says “The majority of the American people as well as most nations and politicians around the world agree with this view.”
  • three“It was carried out by a terrorist group but that the American government supported and took advantage of the situation.” source
  • » The craziest part?: Ahmadinejad said these things one right after the other, in succession. For understandable reasons, the U.S. and a few other countries walked out on him. What a tactless scumbag, what with his conspiracy theories and all.

Mark Zuckerberg 26 year old founder of FaceBook donates 100 million to The Newark New Jersey School system.. Please RT this is AMAZING!!Thu Sep 23 21:34:53 via web

  • Know how you know you did something great? Because you have a cool, confident guy with a million followers turning into a total fanboy. That’s how impressive Mark Zuckerberg’s $100 million donation to Newark, New Jersey’s dilapidated school district was. On a side noote, can we just say that anyone giving Zuck crap over this is a scumbag? We know that makes the NY Post, New York Magazine and Gawker or mortal enemies, but at least Arianna Huffington still likes us. Oh, and Tyrese. He thinks we’re cool, too. source

Politics: Shocker: Democrats play it cautiously, blow golden opportunity

  • NO! Dems won’t vote on tax cuts prior to the midterms source
  • » Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, top Democrats have inexplicably decided not to vote on the Bush tax cuts before the midterm elections. Doing so would have been a sure-fire win, as it would have a) ended the Bush tax cuts, b) fired up the progressive base, and either c) extended the middle-class tax cuts, or d) forced Republicans to vote against extending the middle-class tax cuts. Those are all good things for the Democrats, yet true to their party’s name, they’ve decided to play it safe, and put the whole thing off until after the election. It’s almost as if they want to lose the House.
