U.S.: Furlough funday: 150,000 state workers in California are screwed

  • They’re caught in the middle of California’s never-ending budget fight. After a lengthy court battle as part of the seemingly-yearly budget deadlock that comes up in California, the California Supreme Court allowed governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to force a three-day-a-month furlough on state government employees. By the way, Schwarzenegger and the legislature have yet to decide on how to solve the state’s $19.1 billion budget deficit. Nice to see the people in the middle get screwed. source

Politics: Biggest surprise of Iraq troops leaving: Rachel Maddow’s there

  • Whoa, how did that happen? Well, a lot of reasons. NBC and MSNBC nailed an exclusive in getting time with the last combat troops to leave Iraq (kudos to embedded reporter Richard Engelfor the scoop), and to celebrate, they had Rachel Maddow secretly leave for Iraq without telling anyone. Which, beyond surreal, is kind of awesome. Good show, MSNBC. source

Politics: Here’s a little kibble for Tea Partiers and anti-Tea Partiers

  • The ManifestoDick Armey, former House Majority Leader, published a manifesto in today’s Wall Street Journal (along with Matt Kibbe) explaining what the “Tea Party Movement” wants. It’s epic. “But let us be clear about one thing,” they write. “The tea party movement is not seeking a junior partnership with the Republican Party, but a hostile takeover of it.”

The antidoteIn case you’re a lefty and need an antidote after reading that whole thing, some genius satirist decided to make a bunch of faux Modern Tea Party shirts with funny slogans. And all of them are rip-roaringly hilarious. Trust us. We can’t stop laughing. source

Politics: Harry Reid’s survival tactic: He just plans to let Sharron Angle talk

  • Reid had no chance to win before. He has a shot to win now. He could still lose, but I have to say he is favored.
  • Nevada Republican Senate primary candidate Danny Tarkanian • Explaining why Sharron Angle has given Reid a chance to survive his primary. And Reid is taking full advantage: “Our focus groups that we’ve done, my staff tells me this — her statements, they can’t believe that anyone would say that,” Reid said. “That’s why most of our TV just has her talking.” Because you can’t top people saying stupid things as entertainment. source

Tech: Apple’s recent buy: What the heck is LiquidMetal, anyway?

  • As you can see, it’s not your average metal. The metal, which has glasslike properties, high flexibility and extreme toughness (and can easily be made en masse), was developed at the California Institute of Technology. It’s already used in the iPhone 3G and 3GS’ SIM remover, and is now alone, in the electronics sphere, thanks to an exclusive license with the company. Maybe Apple will cover their next iPhone in something other than glass. We can dream, can’t we? source

Tech: BlackBerry Torch getting torched for its low price; RIM complains

  • Sounds like somebody has a sore spot. Research in Motion is all like, “whatever,” regarding criticism of their BlackBerry Torch’s price point. Why? Well, they say they’ve done it for a lot of products. A spokeswoman claims that “obviously … common online pricing and promotional strategy that has been used with many other product introductions in the past.” Well, in a lot of ways, that makes it even worse, actually. You only sold 150,000 units with a $99 price point on Amazon at launch, considering the hyperbole you had going on? Sad. source
