Culture: Corey Haim’s death blamed on … wait for it … prescription drug ring (?!)

  • Corey Haim’s death is yet another tragedy linked to the growing problem of prescription-drug abuse. This problem is increasingly linked to criminal organizations, like the illegal and massive prescription-drug ring under investigation.
  • California Attorney General (and gubernatorial candidate) Jerry Brown • Regarding the cause of Haim’s death. Despite the autopsy having left evidence of this unconnected as of yet, an unauthorized prescription note in Haim’s name was found during an unrelated investigation on prescription drug fraud – meaning, even if it wasn’t the cause (still possible), he was illegally getting his vicodin and other drugs with forged doctor’s notes. Is it us, or is Jerry Brown trying to win political points with this quote? source

Culture: Play him off, next-generation Keyboard Cat! Play him off!

  • What’s great about Keyboard Cat is that the original video is 26 years old. But that means that Fatso, the original cat, is long dead (sadly). But Charlie Schmidt’s awesome goofy video is no longer just encased in amber for all eternity. The next generation of Keyboard Cat has been introduced. Meet Bento. (Hi Bento!) See him play the keys like a king. source

U.S.: Bored atheist overplays his hand on the Pledge of Allegiance

  • 2002 Michael Newdow, an atheist who’s really angry his daughter had to recite the Pledge of Allegiance, got the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals to say that “one nation under God” was unconstitutional.
  • 2010 Newdow, in a separate case, tried to push this button again. This time, the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals said nothing required anyone to say the Pledge, thus reversing their decision. source

Politics: Gavin Newsom puts his left foot in, puts his left foot out, puts his…

  • … left foot in, and he shakes it all about. The San Francisco mayor is doing the hokey pokey, with his political ambitions, reportedly announcing he’s running for lieutenant governor of California months after dipping out of a gubernatorial bid. Beyond being a less glamorous job, his dip-out from before gives his primary opponent, Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn, an obvious thing to attack him on. She’ll say, “Oh, he’s indecisive!” Just wait for that. We gave you a preview of the primary. source

Music: The Drive-By Truckers make a “Big To-Do” on record

  • For some reason, this skipped under our radar, but here it is – the new Drive-By Truckers album. It comes out Tuesday, two years after the solid “Brighter Than Creation’s Dark,” which may have been the band’s peak. And that’s saying a lot.
