Tech: There’s a lot of clutter in Tweetland, Techcrunch sez

That's a lot of tweets
  • See that microscopic window, split in half because it’s so huge? Those are all Tweets run through Seesmic’s Web interface, made as a joke by one of the program’s developers. (There’s 1,200 in there.) TechCrunch’s Erick Schonfeld argues that this is a bug, and it’s a good excuse to cut back on the clutter the program makes. We argue that while he has a point, he’s being perhaps a little dramatic. source

World: Iran’s well along in knowing how to make their own nukes

  • They plan to MacGyver it. Great. You didn’t have enough other things to worry about, and now Iran has enough knowledge and data to make a nuclear bomb, United Nations members say. We’re going to hide in a bunker now. If you’re worrying about how we’re gonna update the site, don’t; we’ve managed to get wi-fi in there. source

Music: We continue our Saturday Mixtape decade-in-review with 2003

  • 1. The Jayhawks’ sturdy approach was never really appreciated after about 1995 or so, which is a shame because “Rainy Day Music” is a great album, and “Save it for a Rainy Day” is one of the alt-country band’s best singles.
    2. M. Ward’s under-the-radar rep tipped above the radar after 2003, but “Transfiguration of Vincent” is as good as his later albums – if not better. “Vincent O’Brien” plays centerpiece.
    3. Back in 2003, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs were overhyped and under-appreciated all at once. “Maps” went a long way to make them accessible, but their first album, “Fever To Tell,” was full of spiky bursts of energy like “Y-Control.”
    4. Dear Ben Gibbard: You’re sitting on a huge potential pile of money and you haven’t done anything serious with it in nearly six years. No matter the success of Death Cab for Cutie, the reason that people started caring about DCfC en masse is The Postal Service. Here’s a B-side, “There’s Never Enough Time,” covering a topic that we know all too well about.
    5. The Wrens are the quintessential indie success story; ditched by a label that later sold out and became huge by pushing Creed, they disappeared for years, only to return with a victory lap of an album, “The Meadowlands.” “She Sends Kisses” has a great hook that stays with you for days. source

World: Is Italy’s Silvio Berlusconi on a mission to suppress the press?

  • We ask the prime minister to stop the campaign of accusations against journalists and to tell the truth.
  • Italian Press Federation head Franco Siddi • On the lawsuits Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has been filing against major newspapers in Italy. The PM, who either owns or is related to the owners of many major Italian media outlets, has been suing newspapers covering the major sex scandals against him. Silvio Berlusconi says the protests are a joke. • source

World: Irony: Iran’s Jew-trashing Ahmadinejad may have been born Jewish

  • By making anti-Israeli statements he is trying to shed any suspicions about his Jewish connections. He feels vulnerable in a radical Shia society.
  • Centre for Arab and Iranian Studies spokesman Ali Nourizadeh • Describing newfound evidence that Ahmadinejad was born Jewish. In 2008, a photo was shot of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad holding up his identity card. It lists his birth name as Sabourjian, which is a Jewish name that means “cloth weaver.” Furthermore, the card suggests his family may have changed to Islam after giving birth. Is it possible he’s overcompensating? Who knows, but this is a pretty good story if it’s true. • source

Politics: Daily Poll: Would Sarah Palin be bad news for the GOP in 2012?

  • Steve Schmidt, who worked with Palin in the 2008 campaign as John McCain’s chief campaign strategist, says she’d be a disaster. As these things usually are, it was a huge PR windfall for Palin, who stomped on it. The question is, is he right? Is he wrong? Vote. source

Tech: Amazon’s long Orwellian nightmare is finally over

  • There was a settlement in the “1984” lawsuit. Amazon, which deleted a bunch of George Orwell’s books off users’ Kindles, did not admit guilt in the $150,000 settlement (which largely goes to the lawyers and literacy charities; no word on what the plaintiffs got), but they did agree not to delete content off of users’ Kindles without their consent. Which is what everyone wanted in the first place. source

Biz, U.S.: Unemployment benefits aren’t lasting as long as unemployment

  • 26
    weeks
the length of time that unemployment is available for those out of work (right now, there’s a lot of those people)
  • 26.2

the length of time that it takes for those people to find a job, on average (this has never happened before) source
