World: One Saudi guy boasted about sex on TV. Now the network’s closed.

  • Saudi Arabia isn’t putting up with that #&*@. The Saudi offices of Lebanese channel LBC were closed, weeks after Mazen Abdul Jawad was shown explaining foreplay and cruisin’ techniques on one of the network’s shows. Saudi Arabia is an incredibly conservative country, so this was a system shock. Abdul Jawad now faces charges for publicizing vice which could be punishable by the death penalty. Man, we wonder what would happen if we beamed five minutes of MTV into Saudi Arabia. source

Politics: Granola-eating hippies ask: Could the U.S. go fascist?

  • Fascism only grows in the disturbed soil of a mature democracy in crisis.
  • Sara Robinson of the Campaign for America’s Future • In a column on Alternet discussing whether fascism could happen in the U.S. someday, particularly in the wake of harsh protests during the Obama administration in recent weeks. Robinson notes that “it’s always rooted in the promise of restoring lost national pride by resurrecting the culture’s traditional myths and values.” We personally think both sides of this debate need to take a chill pill, go to a bar and drink a cool PBR. • source

U.S., World: The next diplomacy frontier: Climate change in unstable regions

  • I’ve been making this argument for a number of years, but it has not been a focus because a lot of people had not connected the dots.
  • Democratic Sen. John Kerry, who chairs the Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee • Regarding climate change and the effect it could have on the world’s stability. Some regions, such as sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and Southeast Asia – areas which already could be considered among the world’s more unstable – could face rising tides, droughts, food crises and other problems as a result of global warming. Recent war games have suggested this, and the U.S. is considering how it will handle these issues down the road. • source
