Music: ShortFormBand: Wheat loves coffee almost as much as music

Wheat plus Wheat's feet
  • Whoa, what is this?

In our continuing effort to try new things, here’s our latest: Band coverage! This time, indie-pop stalwarts Wheat (fresh off a solid 7.4 on Pitchfork) discuss their love of music, coffee … and coffee. Want to see your band here? E-mail us or bug us on Twitter!

    Listen to them

Q1: In 15 words or less, describe your sound: Syrup with cream. Maybe some caffeine, maybe some alcohol. Many mistakes kept.

Q2: Name three influences that inspire you, with three words each on why they’re awesome:
    Family: I try harder
    Music: I feel lighter
    Coffee: I keep going

Q3: What’s a recent song you’ve been digging? Write ten words explaining why:
Bon Iver: “Woods” Amazing smash of lullaby and bad hip-hop vocoder awesomeness!

Q4: In 140 characters or less, how do you use social networking to get the word out: We use Myspace, Facebook, the regular wheat website, and e-mail. (Is that social networking?) And we still use postcards. I know that might seem old school, but we love the tangible object.

Q5: In 15 words or less, what’s next for you? Bring our new songs and love to the people. Another song, another record, another coffee.source

World: Aussie authorities try to smoke out a terror cell in Melbourne

  • They were apparently plotting an attack. Sounds like an interesting middle of the night in Melbourne: 400 officers executed 19 search warrants in nine neighborhoods and arrested four people. That’s a lot of officers, a lot of warrants, a lot of places, but not many people arrested. Those arrested (who were Australian nationals, though some of Somalian and Lebanese descent) plotted a suicide attack using semiautomatic weapons. It could have been very bad had the suspects pulled it off, authorities say. source

About: The Associated Press is dead to us. We’re not covering their stories.

  • © 2009 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.
  • The slogan that runs at the bottom of each Associated Press story • We copied it from the bottom of one of their articles. Why? Because it’s silly in the day and age of the Internet. Of course it’s going to get copied and redistributed, paraphrased and quoted. It’s how information spreads. But not anymore from us. We quit. This was the last straw. You used to be great, AP, but now you’re just a giant beast of another era. Even your efforts to reach younger customers fail. So, we’re no longer linking to your stories on this site. Or, if we absolutely need to (which, considering the wide variety of content online, we don’t need to), we’ll link to you guys using a NoFollow tag. Think we should do this? Let us know. We’re up for any opinion you have on this matter. We simply want the AP to respect the rights of its audience. It’s only fair.

Music: Heath Ledger directed a Modest Mouse video. See it tomorrow.

  • Ooh, spooky. Modest Mouse has had a pretty interesting career thus far – from small-time indie icons to chart-topping stars who can call the unspeakably awesome Johnny Marr a member. Now they hold the legacy of having a video directed by gone-too-soon Oscar winner Heath Ledger. Ledger’s unfinished video for “King Rat,” later finished by THE MASSES (a production group Ledger was a partner in), comes out tomorrow on MySpace. So that’s right: Tomorrow, you have a reason to go to MySpace. source

We have another suggestion to put at the bottom of these posters: Lame. Vitriol didn’t get Obama into office, kids. It won’t get him out. source

World: Even if appetite sizes don’t shrink, candy bars in the U.K. might

As one way to target the obesity crisis, candy bars and soda cans may come in smaller sizes in the U.K., in hopes that smaller sizes become standard. source

Biz, Tech: All those ads that target you are being targeted … by the FTC

  • Google and Facebook, among others, could feel the burn. Federal Trade Commission Chairman Jon Leibowitz has brought with him a rep as a reformer, having fought hard against spyware. The latest thing he wants to reform is something that drives the financial engine of the web: Behavioral-targeted advertising. Google uses it. Facebook uses it (sometimes very poorly). Lots of other people do too. And sometimes consumers don’t know when they’re getting targeted. That’s something Leibowitz is working on. Expect heads to roll. source
