Offbeat: “I” before “e” except after whatever: The Brits kill grammar rule

  • They said it had too many exceptions. The British government, after weighing their options, decided to get rid of their insufficient “i before e except after c” rule. They specifically decided to get rid of it in its “Support For Spelling” documents sent to thousands of primary schools, noting higher frequencies of words that did not follow that standard – neither with a “c” or without one. Just to emphasize the point, we used a bunch of different exceptions in this post. Weird. source

Culture, U.S.: Barack Obama gets mad props from supernerd John Hodgman

  • John Hodgman is our hero. Between “The Areas of My Expertise,” “The Daily Show” and the “I’m A Mac” commercials, Hodgman has lots of nerd cred. So the fact that he calls Barack Obama the “nerd president” in this Radio & TV Correspondents’ Dinner speech is awesome and significant.source

U.S.: Obama dares us to be better dads. But what if we don’t have kids?

  • We need to step out of our own heads and tune in. We need to turn off the television and start talking with our kids, and listening to them, and understanding what’s going on in their lives.
  • Barack Obama • On the occasion of Father’s Day, discussing what fathers should do to be better parents. Obama, of course, famously didn’t know his father very well, and says he wants to be a better father than that. “It was only later in life that I found out that he actually led a very tragic life,” he noted. “And in that sense, it was the myth that I was chasing as opposed to knowing who he really was.” • source

Tech, World: Unable to block porn from computers, China turns to Google

  • Google has been asked by China to block a feature that brings up related search terms when typing in a word, because apparently it was showing too much explicit related content. source
  • China has been ratcheting up its internet censorship lately, much to the chagrin of users. On top of Tiananmen Square blocking, they tried (and failed) to put censoring software on all PCs. source

U.S.: Remember the Oklahoma EMT/cop drama? Well, here’s a follow-up

  • And even after being informed that we had a patient, there was total disregard. So he started in a state of rage and simply escalated from that point.
  • Maurice White Jr. • A paramedic involved in a YouTube-captured altercation with an Oklahoma state trooper. The trooper, Daniel Martin, believed that one of the EMTs in the ambulance flipped off the officer and flipped out on White, who noted immediately that there was a patient in the vehicle. Offbeat: To nerd and corrupt: Did a Geek Squad worker abuse his power?

They give them badges? Really? A New Joisey man was arrested Thursday night after allegedly using his authority to fix computers at high prices to instead convince a prostitute to perform sexual acts with him. No matter the outcome, 25-year-old Jay Mora of Newark is going to have a hard time living this one down. source
