Politics: Rick Scott pissing off everyone – in both parties – in the legislature

  • The governor doesn’t understand there is a State Constitution and that we have three branches of government. They are talking about the attitude that he is still the CEO of his former health care corporation, and that is not going to work in this state, in Tallahassee, in my district. The people believe in three branches of government.
  • Republican Florida State Senator Mike Fasano • Criticizing Tea Party-backed Gov. Rick Scott for pretty much acting LIKE A BOSS instead of a guy who has to answer to the legislative branch. He’s been making some pretty bold decisions – like, for example, selling state-owned jets because he had one of his own – without getting Congressional approval. “It’s necessary at this time, I think — because our governor’s new — to let him know this is not a monarchy,” said Democratic State Senator Arthenia L. Joyner. “He’s not a king. This is a democracy.” Joyner brought a lawsuit against Scott because he killed a plan for high-speed rail. Scott, who recently unveiled his budget plan hundreds of miles away from Tallahassee, shouldn’t get too cocky – the GOP has a supermajority in both houses and can override his veto easily. source

World: Not so much: Saif Gaddafi’s speech goes over like a lead balloon

  • He is worse than his father. His claims about the establishment of Islamic emirates in the country is not true at all.
  • A local Muslim Brotherhood leader in Libya • Disputing the comments made by Mummar Gaddafi’s son, Saif, earlier this evening, which suggested that Islamists would cause civil war if the protests continued in the country. Meanwhile, Obama’s folks have been fishing for “clarification” what Saif meant. We can already tell you what he meant: He meant to impress us all with the way he inherited his crazy from his dad. source

Offbeat, World: Peruvian president blames low approval ratings on Peruvians

  • We are what we are: sad, distrustful … We have a natural lack of trust.
  • Peruvian President Alan Garcia • Suggesting he has a low approval rating (34 percent approve, 62 percent disapprove) because Peruvians are naturally unhappy. He suggests nearby countries, like Brazil, are happier. Way to flip the message. Are the people saying “BOO” or “BOO-urns”?  source

Politics: We’d like to correct David Paterson’s reelection run speech

  • There’s so many people saying, ‘you shouldn’t run for governor.’ But you need to know this is a governor who does not quit will not win.
  • New York Gov. David Paterson • Who brushed off a New York Times article which should have been murder for his reelection chances to announce his plans today. Paterson, who is unpopular in his state, faces a challenge in the Democratic primary from Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, who, like the last attorney general (Eliot Spitzer) has bolstered his rep in that position. Paterson, on the other hand, is trying to use his underdog status – he has just $3 million in the bank, which is anemic for a gubernatorial campaign – to his advantage. Good luck with that, bro. This ain’t no movie comeback story where the underdog wins. source

U.S.: California has no remorse for state legislators and budget crises

  • A statewide referendum vote on the struggle to kill the massive budget crisis in California ended up with only tears, as none of the first five pieces of legislation got over 41% of the vote. source
  • However, the sixth piece of legislation did – unfortunately for state lawmakers, the legislation caps salaries of elected officials during years where the budget’s bad. Sucks for them. source

Tech: Twitter apparently took a cue from the Facebook playbook

  • Retweet this if you disagree w Twitter’s decision to hide replies to ppl you don’t follow. #fixreplies
  • A current retweet floating around Twitter • After the announcement that Twitter would hide replies from people you don’t follow yesterday, a decision that seemed arbitrary and caused many people to shake their fists in anger. However, compared to a Facebook dramabomb, this is comparatively nothing. • source

U.S.: Repealing “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” not on the top burner right now

  • Defense Secretary Robert Gates says it’s further down the list. Gates says that while he and President Obama have started talking about it, they have “a lot on our plates right now” and are early in the discussion phase. The policy against gays in the military has been in place since 1993 and has long been controversial. source
