Culture: Trial of the century: Is Rod Blagojevich’s lawyer making fun of him?

  • You have to be comatose not to figure out how to get a dollar out of $52 billion. But who didn’t? Him!
  • Rod Blagojevich’s lawyer, Sam Adam Jr. • Making a comment that seems to suggest that Blago was too stupid to figure out how to defraud the state. The ex-Illinois governor’s former confidante, however, Antoin “Tony” Rezko, did, Adam argues. Adam’s opening statement lasted an hour and 45 minutes and opened up a trial destined to rank with the OJ Simpson trial for its sheer goofiness. Or at least we hope it does. source

Politics: Rod Blagojevich: A man in need of a circus of a trial

Pretty much the best chance he has of winning his corruption trial is to be as blustery and over-the-top as possible. Wonder what Kato Kaelin is doing right now. source

U.S.: Protip: Using black bar redactions on PDFs doesn’t really work

  • Mediaite broke it. DocumentCloud totally owned it. The Blago corruption court case hit a new high today after it was suggested that Obama might be implicated in the case. But this fact didn’t come out directly. It was actually redacted in this subpoena released today. However, a glitch in the PDF software they used to make the document made the redacted statement very easy to read. Which gave the boys at DocumentCloud a chance to show off their mad skillz. Check ’em out. They’re pretty awesome. source

U.S.: Could the White House push for Khalid Shaikh Mohammed military trial?

  • We are evaluating based on New York City logistical and security concerns on trial in federal courts.
  • White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs • Regarding what’s turning out to be a bit of a boondoggle for the administration, where to try 9/11 mastermind Khalid Shaikh Mohammed. At first, they wanted to try him in a New York civilian court, where they ran into heavy NIMBYism. (Honestly, they’d probably run into it anywhere with this case.) But now it looks like they’re changing their mind. Probably for the best. source

U.S., World: Could the Baptists in Haiti get tried in the U.S. for child trafficking?

  • problem Haiti wants to try the ten Americans accused of trafficking children into the Dominican Republican. However, with a broken infrastructure, they don’t have a working court system right now.
  • solution The Haitian government may be willing to ship them off to the U.S. to get tried there. Were they acting in good faith when taking away these “orphans” (some of whom actually had parents)? source

U.S.: Obama: Maybe having the 9/11 trial in Manhattan a bad idea

  • NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg isn’t on board anymore. Months after planning to have the trial for 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed (a.k.a. Mr. Bedhead) in Manhattan, local pressure is causing the Obama administration to reconsider its plan. “Conversations have occurred within the administration to discuss contingency options should the possibility of a trial in Lower Manhattan be foreclosed upon by Congress or locally,” said one official under an anonymous cloak. Many New York politicians have criticized the idea. source
