U.S.: Terror threat level warnings to get a functional overhaul

  • The alerts will be specific to the threat. They may recommend certain actions, or suggest   looking for specific suspicious behavior. And they will have a specified end date.
  • Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano • Speaking on the topic of the oft-maligned terror threat level scale imposed following 9/11 (you know the one, orange=bad, red=really bad), Napolitano claimed that the future system of warning Americans about terrorism risks will be more informative. The old system, which merely stated the risk with no contextual information, was often accused of being vague and unhelpful. source

World: OOH BURN: Russian opposition leader rips Putin over airport blast

  • The battle against terrorism is clearly not among Putin’s priorities, unless, of course, we discount his daily demagoguery on the subject.
  • Russian opposition leader Boris Nemtsov • Getting in a major burn on Vladimir Putin in the wake of yesterday’s deadly blast at Moscow’s Domodedovo airport. It’s just one of many deadly terror attacks in the country in the last fifteen years, leading to claims like Nemtsov’s, where he takes Putin to task for not taking the work of terrorism quite seriously enough. And he’s not alone – many in the Russian blogosphere feel the same way, that the country is ineffective at actually preventing tragedies like yesterday’s. Are they right? source

World: Moscow Domodedovo airport bombing: Yes, it was a suicide bomber

  • The staff organized emergency exits, but the door was very narrow and people crowded there immediately. So the staff started breaking the walls to let the people out. Soon after, the airport stopped receiving arrival flights.
  • Eyewitness Tatyana Papova • Discussing the scene at Moscow’s Domodedovo airport in the wake of the major bombing. She also notes that the only people who stayed behind were those who didn’t get luggage. CNN is reporting right now (we’re listening to our tellies) that the bomb was a handmade suicide bomb loaded with shrapnel designed to cause even more injuries. More details as we get them. source

World: High deathtoll for Shi’ites, police following bombing in Iraq

  • 48+ people killed by bombs targeting Shi’ites, police source
  • » A horribly bloody week in Iraq Following a particularly devastating attack on police recruits in Tekrit, the sectarian bombings and targeting of Shi’ites and Iraqi forces continue. There’s not much that can be said to add significance to this. It’s the definition of terrorism, cold and stark.

World: Here’s another awful tragedy to fill out your rough weekend

  • Look, there has been a lot of sadness in the news this weekend. The whole uplifting thing with golden-voiced Ted Williams seems like a long-ago memory, which is unfortunate. And now, more sadness. In Niger, two French men – a groom and a best man – were kidnapped before a wedding could take place. Antoine de Léocour, a 25-year-old aid worker, had planned to marry a local woman, but the two men were instead kidnapped by people reportedly part of al-Qaeda’s North African operation. A day later, they were found killed in the desert. French president Nicolas Sarkozy called the situation a “cowardly and barbaric act.” Like we haven’t had many of those this weekend. Sigh. source

World: Christmas Day attack on starving Pakistanis hits new level of evil

  • So, it’s one thing to attack people living lives in normal conditions. That’s pretty awful on its own. But when you attack those who are starving and attempting to receive food from the World Food Program in Pakistan, that’s a whole new world of evil you’re entering. We feel awful for those who were hurt, and get behind Obama’s statement on this: “Killing innocent civilians outside a World Food Program distribution point is an affront to the people of Pakistan, and to all humanity.” The more than 43 people killed and 100 injured didn’t deserve treatment like this from anyonesource

U.S.: TSA issues fake warning, treats real whistleblower like terrorist

  • fake The TSA is warning travelers to be careful when bringing thermoses or coffee cups onto planes because they might be used for transporting bombs. While they have no specific threat, they admit it could possibly be a danger. Uh, okay … thanks for telling us on Christmas Eve!
  • real A pilot recorded, using his camera phone, an *ACTUAL* security hole at one of California’s largest airports. The TSA then went to his home and confiscated his gun, which he has to protect himself in the cockpit. Wait, wait, how will that help solve the real problem? source
