Tech: Scientists impress themselves with antimatter breakthrough

  • See that stuff above? That’s antimatter (antihydrogen, to be specific). A bunch of scientists are currently getting way too excited about this stuff because it holds the key to the universe or something. We’re going to burst that bubble right now and say that we don’t care. Fucking magnets – how do they work? source

Tech: Scientists claim to have found the “Homer Simpson gene” in mice

  • A big question this research raises is why would we, or mice, have a gene that makes us less smart – a Homer Simpson gene? I believe that we are not really seeing the full picture.
  • Emory University professor John Hepler, PhD • Regarding the research he’s done which shows that mice get smarter if you take a certain gene out of them. The RGS14 gene turns off a certain part of the brain, the CA2 region, and many scientists aren’t sure what it’s for. However, when they turned off the gene in mice, they suddenly had much stronger mental abilities. Neat. source

Tech: Loyola University scientists make a HIV research breakthrough

  • great! Loyola University researchers pinpointed the key elements of a protein, TRIM5a, that destroys HIV in monkeys. With a $225,000 microscope. Give them a raise!
  • … but More research needs to be done to figure out how to make the protein do the same thing for humans. Get back to work, you bums! Monkeys aren’t people. source

Tech: Whoa: Are the roots of human sperm 600 million years old?

  • So, yeah, that’s kinda old, guys. Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine recently released a new study noting that the genetic secret sauce in human sperm, a gene named Boule, is apparently so important that it’s found in nearly all animals – something not confirmed before the study. “Our findings also show that humans, despite how complex we are, across the evolutionary lines all the way to flies, which are very simple, still have one fundamental element that’s shared,” said Eugene Xu, author of the study published in the latest issue of PLoS Genetics. So, why are they researching it? Well, they’re trying to get to the root of male infertility; Boule would be important to target for such a drug. Neat. source

Tech: Bill Gates throws money to a bunch of awesome crap for no reason

  • 78 the number of health projects Bill Gates is funding
  • $100,000 the amount each of the project

  • » What did he fund, anyway? In order of weirdness (least weird to most weird): A cell phone microscope to help fight malaria, a vaccine triggered by human sweat, treating migrant workers’ scarves with insecticide to reduce malaria, using ultrasounds at reversible male contraceptives, a way to control mosquitoes using flesh-eating plants, and an imaging technology to kill parasites with FRICKIN’ LASER BEAMS.
