Politics: Sen. Jim DeMint is ruining the GOP’s well-established plans

  • The South Carolina senator, who on the ideological scale is far right to counterpart Lindsey Graham’s moderate conservative, has been sticking his nose in congressional and senate races across the country, pushing the GOP to the right and causing headaches for folks like Mitch McConnell, whose own candidate in Kentucky has been undermined by DeMint’s support of shorts-wearing bizarro hippie favorite Rand Paul. Politics: What the GOP wants from Elena Kagan: A tight interpretation

  • I think we’ll be looking at her testimony because she has so little other record, it’s going to be a big deal. It’s so important how she testifies.
  • Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions • Discussing why Elena Kagan’s upcoming testimony will be key in building a lot of opinions of her. Regarding what he’s looking for, he says Republicans would like to know “whether her philosophy of law is so broad in her interpretation of the Constitution that you are not faithful to the Constitution and laws.” This isn’t something to be taken lightly. The last nominee who didn’t have judicial experience, Bush-selected Harriet Meiers, was withdrawn due in part to lack of experience. Kagan has a better record than Meiers did, but the lack of judicial experience could be a deal-breaker for some if she doesn’t answer questions to their liking. source

U.S.: Bob Bennett out: In Utah, Republicans throw over one of their own

  • The political atmosphere, obviously, has been toxic and it’s very clear some of the votes that I have cast have added to the toxic environment. Looking back on them, with one or two very minor exceptions, I wouldn’t have cast them any differently even if I’d known at the time it would cost me my career.
  • Utah Sen. Bob Bennett • Regarding his shocking loss at the Utah Republican Convention, where he was ousted in favor of two fresh faces – Tim Bridgewater and Mike Lee, who will face each other in a June primary. Bennett, a three-term politician, is the first Utah senator ousted by his party since 1940. Fellow Sen. Orrin Hatch said he felt bad for his counterpart, “But you know, people are angry. They’re really upset at the way things are going and I think to a degree that’s what hurt him.” source

Politics: Sean Duffy, Real World congressman? Hey, it could happen

  • Back in 1997, when Montana was letting after-school program kids drink alcohol and Syrus was hitting on their parents, The Real World (Season 6, Boston) featured a champion lumberjack amongst its cast members. Now, Sean Duffy‘s long been married to fellow conservative Rachel (Season 3, San Francisco), he’s a longstanding district attorney in his home state of Wisconsin, and he’s giving longstanding Democratic Congressman David Obey fits. Plus, he has bizarro hippie support. A Real World congressman? Hey, at least it wasn’t Puck (Season 3, San Francisco). source

Politics: Obama better watch out for “Generic Republican” in 2012

  • However, it is a problem for Republicans that no actual Republican can approach the performance of the generic candidate, probably because the generic candidate is Rorschach blot that allows each respondent to create what amounts to their fantasy candidate.
  • FiveThirtyEight blogger Nate Silver • Making a very astute point based on early polling for the 2012 presidential election. Essentially, while a “generic” Republican candidate can handily beat Obama right now, according to a compilation of polls he put together, no flesh-and-blood candidate can actually get close to that mark right now. The closest is Mitt Romney, who is less than six points behind. Sarah Palin, however, would be a wash, as she trails Obama by 14.4 points. Granted, it’s still very early (as Silver notes), and a lot can change, but that’s a fairly interesting signifying point. source

Politics: Bizarro hippies on tax day: What legislators can we knock off?

  • We’d love to beat Nancy Pelosi in San Francisco but she’s too strong. We try to keep our focus on the doable.
  • Bizarro Hippie Express strategist Sal Russo • Regarding their plans to attempt to knock Democrats out of office this year. They have claimed some victories (sorta) in the form of the retirements of Chris Dodd and Bart Stupak (claims which are kinda questionable) and the party switch of Arlen Specter. The grassroots political movement is in D.C. today because it’s Tax Day and they want to make a big deal out of that day. Their best reason why should be this, but isn’t. source

Politics: “Hip-hop Republicans” not impressed with Tea Party’s evolution

  • It’s strayed away from the message of wasteful spending and Washington not listening to its constituents, and it’s become more of this rally of hate.
  • Black conservative Brandon Brice • Regarding the Tea Party movement. Brice, who labels himself a “hip-hop Republican,” says that the movement was a lot more diverse a year ago, and now it seems hateful and disrespectful to other races. Not every black conservative feels that way, but this does play into the movement’s image problem. 79 percent of Tea Partiers are white. 6 percent are black. source

Politics: GOP forgets ugly feet covered by new health care law, too

  • We wonder what the Craiglist posting for the ugly dude’s feet was – “must have feet that have yellowing, ingrown toenails and you’re completely uncomfortably with showing to the world.” We hope the foot model got paid handsomely for this ad.

Politics: RNC hires guy with just the right rep to continue their finance fail

  • good The RNC realizes that people aren’t willing to put up with their wasteful strip-club spending, and hire a guy to watch over finances.
  • bad That guy, Neil S. Alpert, was fined $4,000 for improperly spending $37,670 that wasn’t his from two separate PACs. Oops. source
