Politics: Michael Steele to all the Republicans he ticked off: Sorry, guys

  • You can’t please everyone, but you can certainly make them all mad at you at the same time. And that is a lesson well-learned. It is an opportunity as well.
  • RNC Chairman Michael Steele • At the Southern Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans, attempting to apologize for the drama around the group he leads, including the insane spending the group is accused of doing. During the speech in a half-full hotel conference room, Steele didn’t appear ready to resign from his leadership spot, but did apologize and try to build future optimism. “Folks have been mad at us in the past,” he said, “and we have learned from that past and we are ready to move on to a bright future, as leaders, as Republicans, as conservatives.” source

Politics: Top RNC staffer quits, throws dagger on the way out

  • Let me be clear so that there is no misunderstanding. I don’t care if the $2,000 was spent in February at a strip club or a pizza parlor. This is a matter of principle. That $2,000 should have been used to promote our conservative ideals.
  • New Hampshire Republican National Committee leader Sean Mahoney • Sending in his resignation in a way that stings. He’s not even the first member to quit the RNC since the scandal hit, but his both-middle-fingers-in-the-air approach is fun to watch. Michael Steele, by the way, will likely remain in his position at least until January when the next RNC election takes place. source

Politics: Michael Steele too street-wise to be held back from RNC job

  • When 71 percent of Republicans think you’re a liability for your party, and you’re in charge of raising money for the party, it might be time to consider a different career path. In other news, Steele brought his race into the debate, suggesting that while he had a slim margin of error, “Barack Obama has a slimmer margin than others.” source

Politics: RNC hires guy with just the right rep to continue their finance fail

  • good The RNC realizes that people aren’t willing to put up with their wasteful strip-club spending, and hire a guy to watch over finances.
  • bad That guy, Neil S. Alpert, was fined $4,000 for improperly spending $37,670 that wasn’t his from two separate PACs. Oops. source

Politics: Another top Republican takes RNC to task for strip club saga

  • This kind of thing has got to stop or they won’t get any contributions. The people that contribute to the committees, both Democrat and Republican, want to know that their money is well spent for the cause, and it needs to be that way.
  • Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl • Speaking on Fox News Sunday about the current scandal facing the Republican National Committee, where they spent much of the money designed to win elections on fairly unnecessary things – private planes and strip clubs, anyone? He’s the second top conservative to say anything about the scandal: Family Research Council head Tony Perkins trashed on the RNC the other day, saying donors should spend their money elsewhere. source

Politics: The Republican National Committee looks like a big bag of fail

  • one Family Research Council leader Tony Perkins told people to stop donating to the RNC, calling them tone-deaf for their strip club drama.
  • two Sarah Palin requested that her name get taken off the speaker list for a RNC event near the Southern Republican Leadership Conference.
  • three If all that stuff isn’t bad enough for the RNC, a fund-raising mailer released by the group directed readers to a sex chat line. Oops.

Politics: RNC staffer: The buck stops at Michael Steele’s desk

  • This is a really bad distraction at a time when we have the Obama administration on the ropes and we are making great gains out. Among the rank and file, we now have attention diverted to this fiscal irregularity and this controversy.
  • RNC platform committee vice chairman Ken Blackwell • Regarding the controversy swirling around the Republican National Committee. Blackwell, who ran for Michael Steele’s job last year, says that Steele knows “the buck stops at his desk,” and needs to make sure that heads will roll. In other news, Jon Stewart gave The Daily Caller, which broke the scandal, a shout-out last night, with this bon mot: “The Web site Daily Caller, best known for being mentioned just now …” Stewart may not be aware that his former arch-nemesis, Tucker Carlson, runs the site, and is actually doing him proud. source

Politics: Michael Steele and Tim Kaine are like polar opposites

  • RNC Michael Steele, who got elected to the post last year, has made numerous errors, often grabs the spotlight, and is now the subject of questionable spending practices.
  • DNC Kaine, the former Virginia governor appointed to the DNC by Obama, has been called “boring” in his leadership role, but dude runs a tight, scandal-free ship. source

Politics: The RNC pays a lot of money for awful Powerpoint presentations

  • $370,000 the amount RNC consultant Rob Bickhart has been paid since June – “more than the president,” as one critic of Bickhart’s notes
  • “fear” what the RNC got from Bickhart, who made a much-ridiculed fundraising slideshow which oddly compares Harry Reid to Scooby-Doo source

Politics: Obama: Don’t dogpile on my boy Harry Reid. He’s a good guy.

  • Harry Reid called me today and apologized for an unfortunate comment reported today. I accepted Harry’s apology without question because I’ve known him for years, I’ve seen the passionate leadership he’s shown on issues of social justice and I know what’s in his heart.  As far as I am concerned, the book is closed.
  • President Barack Obama • Regarding the controversy around Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid reportedly saying something racist about him. Obama forgave quickly, but Fox News is portraying it as an orchestrated campaign to downplay the comments’ impact. And RNC chairman Michael Steele, our generation’s Carlton from “Fresh Prince of Bel Air”, says Reid should resign. Should he? source
